Baby Boom: North Carolina Hospital Sees High Birth Rate During Hurricane Irene (Time.com)

As Irene stormed in, so did the newborns at one hospital along the hurricane's path.

What is it about Irene that brought 60% more babies into the world at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center? Chalk it up to folklore ? or possibly just stress on the mothers-to-be ? but the Wilmington, N.C. hospital saw 17 births during an 18-hour period Friday and Saturday, while they were on lockdown from the storm. The newborns kept the staff busy, as the hospital sees just 10 babies born on the average day.

(PHOTOS: Irene's Path of Destruction)

Indeed, Friday and Saturday were extraordinary as the hospital worried about how to stay in power and functional as the winds and rain battered the North Carolina coast. But fortunately, Irene's might caused no issues for the hospital, aside from the unusually high number of newborns. Rest came quickly for the staff, though, as the birth rate slowed the day after the hurricane passed through. ?It's very quiet here today,? spokeswoman Carolyn Fisher said Sunday.

One thing's for certain: none of the mothers wished to name their child ?Irene.?

(AP) ? Michele Bachmann has a book deal.

Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Group (USA), announced Monday that the Republican presidential candidate's memoir will arrive in November and already has been completed. The book, reports of which first circulated in June, is currently untitled.

Sentinel declined comment on whether Bachmann had assistance on the book. Former Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund said reports that he worked on it were wrong. He said that he had no involvement with the book.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Bachmann is not permitted to receive an advance against royalties.

According to Sentinel, Bachmann will "share previously untold stories" about her private life, "including her roles as a tax attorney, a wife, a mother of five and a foster mother of 23." Virtually all of the Republicans candidates have published books, a standard for modern presidential campaigns.

"People are the most important ingredient in life," Bachmann said in a statement issued Monday through Sentinel. "I love people, and I care deeply that our nation's economy turns around so they can realize their American dream. This book will help to share my enthusiasm for an energized, pro-growth economy, and the life experiences that inform my optimism for the American people and for American greatness."

Bachmann formally entered the race to seek the GOP nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012 in June. By August, she was celebrating a win in the closely watched Iowa Republican straw poll, a test of strength in the leadoff caucus state. But Texas Gov. Rick Perry's decision to join the field has weakened Bachmann's standing in the polls. She trails Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, with Texas Rep. Ron Paul also in the race.

Doug Sachtleben, a Bachmann spokesman, said the book rollout shouldn't detract from her campaign.

"Throughout Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida, the congresswoman has kept a full schedule of meeting and talking with thousands of people, and she will continue with that full campaign schedule all through the days up to and beyond the release of her memoir," Sachtleben said.

Bachmann's climb comes barely five years after her arrival in Washington. The outspoken congresswoman tapped into anger about taxes and government spending that gave rise to the tea party and paired it with a social conservative following she honed in Minnesota.

She also has a history of controversial remarks, most recently when she said that Hurricane Irene and last week's earthquake near Washington were signs that God was unhappy about government spending. Bachmann later explained that she was joking.

Now 55, Bachmann didn't get her political start until her mid-40s when she won a state Senate seat the year after losing a local school board race.

Aston Martin Hunts Motorsport Advantage with Vantage GT3

Well known as a premium sports car brand, Aston Martin has been one of the many premium automobile companies launching products deviating from their established expertise. The four door Rapide and the compact city car Cygnet are two vehicles wearing the Aston Martins winged logo. As far as the British car builder is exploring vehicles in a different light, fans of the Aston Martin brand can rest assured the dedication to sports car motoring is at their core. Auto racing has been a continuing assertion that Aston Martin is a high performance luxury marque eager to contend on the track as hard as on the showroom floor. Set to replace the long serving Aston Martin DBRS9 competition car (a vehicle competing on sports car circuits since 2005), the Vantage GT3 race car will become the British sports car brands newest mechanical athlete.

astonmartinhuntsmotorsportadvantagewithvantagegt3 Aston Martin Hunts Motorsport Advantage with Vantage GT3
Picture of Aston Martin Hunts Motorsport Advantage with Vantage GT3 [source:Automoblog.net]

Constructed on a lightweight yet solid aluminum structure, the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 car is specially trimmed for drivers and teams to aggressively attack the worlds greatest race circuits including Spa Francorchamps and the Nurburgring. Modeled after the $170,000 US stock Aston Martin V12 Vantage, the Vantage GT3 race car preserves a cunning likeness to the street going sports car. The Aston Martin Vantage GT3 receives a properly fitted aerodynamic package designed to channel airflow for perfected downforce and reduced turbulence. Part of this Vantage GT3 cars aerodynamic adjustment includes the adjustable carbon fiber rear wing. This large rear wing is perhaps the most striking characteristic serving to define the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 race car from the road car.

Despite the added body components, the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 goes on a considerable diet shedding 948 pounds from the production street car. Overall weighing just under 2,756 pounds, the competition based sports car travels on a performance tested suspension and braking system. Anti lock braking is still present on this race vehicle adjusted specially for motorsports.

Following GT2 and GT4 category race cars prepared over the years for various competitions, the Aston Martin Vantage in GT3 trim will be the first time the sports cars mighty V 12 engine will serve as the basis for optimized race performance. Using the 6 liter, 12 cylinder powerplant similar to that found in the V12 Vantage, the engines conversion to racing is quite natural. Lightweight construction and a dry sump oil system are attributes in common between vehicle genres. Aston Martin racing engineers found 90 extra horsepower from the V 12 engine allowing the Vantage GT3 to compete with 600 horsepower. Under the hood of the Aston Martin Vantage GT3, some subtle adjustments reposition the engine in a more suitable location conducive of better handling.

Well known motorsport gearbox outfitter Xtrac is supplying the transmission connected to the 6 liter V12 engine. Positioned towards the rear limited slip axle, the Xtrac 6 speed manual is controlled by a driver through steering wheel paddles.

Built around an FIA spec steel roll cage, the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 cockpit is obviously void of the creature comforts connected to the street car. A carbon fiber dash panel, adjustable pedals and a racing seat featuring a 6 point racing harness is set in place for the utilitarian interior. The full array of vehicle controls, driver display and data logging equipment is found inside the Vantage GT3 in efforts to best foster the search for the auto racing competitive edge. A fire suppression system is fitted in the case when auto racing meets a worst case scenario.

With a strong racing pedigree and modern construction, the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has the ingredients to soon become a threat to the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG as well as BMW Z4 race cars in the rich, European motorsport environment. The Aston Martin Vantage GT3 racing car is will undergo track testing in October in preparations of the 2012 sports car competition season. Race teams wishing to run the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 will be paying 298,000 (about $488,000) for the privilege of running this latest member of the British sports car competition family. In the 2012 racing season, motorsport fans can expect the Vantage GT3 car to be lapping tracks within a variety of top caliber racing series including the FIA GT3 Championship and the Blancpain Endurance Series.

Leading by Example | The Frito Epidemic | Live Strong. Live Lean.

?If we are what we eat, then American kids are fritos.?

?Alan Greene, M.D.

I?m troubled by the alarming rate in which the percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing. 32% or 1 out of 3 kids are now considered overweight or obese. I believe that helping children lead a healthy lifestyle starts with you, the parent, who leads by example. Changing the way your family eats and?exercise?is one of the best strategies in reducing childhood obesity.

Regularly eating high-calorie foods and lack of exercise could easily cause your child to gain weight. Set a good example. Make sure YOU are eating healthy foods and exercising regularly to maintain your weight. Emphasize to your kids the positive effects of a healthy lifestyle. Then, be patient and watch your child follow.

WHAT TO AVOID

Excess sodium (salt) is hidden in many processed, frozen and restaurant foods. Foods like pizza (oh no!), mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, french fries, chips, etc. Oh yes?and white bread, a kids biggest source of sodium because they tend to eat so much of it. Go with low-sodium whole grains instead. High sodium foods are not only high in calories but too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure and can cause ulcers, kidney stones and stomach cancer. Salty snacks also tend to make children thirsty and more likely to drink sugary drinks such as juice or soda.

Approximately 35% of Kids? Calories Come From Solid Fat and Sugar (SoFAS)

Not surprising considering the top food sources of SoFAS are baked goods, yeast breads, soda, energy drinks, hot dogs, bacon, french fries and pizza (ugh, pizza just can?t catch a break!). These foods are very high in calories but have little or no nutritional value (empty calories, also known as Junk Food!).

Solid fats are fats that are solid at room temperature, like beef fat, butter, and shortening. Most solid fats are high in saturated fats and/or trans fats and have less monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats and trans fats tend to raise ?bad? (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood. This, in turn, increases the risk for heart disease.

Some foods that contain solid fats include many baked goods, sausages, hot dogs, bacon, dairy, french fries, fried chicken, regular ground beef, cheese and yes, foods that contain cheese such as pizza!

Sugars are healthy in foods such as fruits and milk. These foods contain nutrients that signal the body to use the sugar correctly. But when sugar is added to nutritionally empty foods such as desserts, the natural process is thrown off. Many American kids start consuming excess added sugar almost as soon as they start eating solid foods! The most common of added sugar foods/drinks are fruit drinks, desserts/baked goods and soda. Long-term consequences include obesity, heart disease and dental issues.

THE FIX

As a general rule, don?t use food as a reward or punishment. Come up with other solutions to modify their behavior. And don?t talk about ?bad foods? or completely eliminate all sweets and favorite snacks from their diet as they may rebel and overeat these foods outside the home. Make sweets an occasional treat in your family.

Help shape food preferences by offering a variety of healthy foods and discourage eating while watching TV or playing video games. Eat meals together as often as possible and choose fresh foods over frozen or processed products.

Kids need to be active. Encourage them to be physically active every day; whether it?s playing outside (running, climbing, riding a bike) or through an organized sport, martial arts or dance lessons.

If YOU eat well, exercise regularly, and incorporate healthy habits into your family?s daily life, you?re modeling a healthy lifestyle for your kids that will last. Talk to them about the importance of eating well and being active, but make it a family affair that will become second nature for everyone. Most of all, let your kids know that you love them, no matter what, and just want them to be happy.?

Striking Verizon workers lift jobless claims (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, lifted by striking Verizon Communications workers, a government report showed on Thursday.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 417,000, the Labor Department said, but still nowhere near levels that would signal a recession.

Striking Verizon workers filed 8,500 claims for jobless benefits last week, after submitting 12,500 applications the previous week, which covered the period for the August nonfarm payrolls survey.

That suggests that the strike would have a negative affect on the payrolls count, which will be reported on September 2. The strike against Verizon has ended.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 405,000 last week. The prior week's claims were revised up to 412,000 from the previously reported 408,000.

The claims showed little signs that companies were laying off workers in droves in response to the recent tumble in share prices. Fears the economy is on the brink of slipping back into recession have rattled stock markets, helping to dampen business and consumer confidence.

While the labor market regained some ground in July a new wave of layoffs especially in the financial sector, coupled with the deterioration in business sentiment, could reverse the trend in the months ahead.

Employers added 117,000 new jobs in July after increasing payrolls by only 99,000 in May and June combined.

A Labor Department official said there was nothing unusual in the state-level data. The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, rose 4,000 to 407,500.

The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell 80,000 to 3.64 million in the week ended August13.

Data for the so-called continuing claims covered the survey period for the household survey from which the unemployment rate is derived.

The unemployment rate fell to 9.1 percent from 9.2 percent in June.

The number of Americans on emergency unemployment benefits fell 43,827 to 3.09 million in the week ended August 6, the latest week for which data is available.

A total of 7.29 million people were claiming unemployment benefits during that period under all programs, down from 45,989 from the prior week.

Things To Consider Home Security - HOME IMPROVEMENT AND GARDEN

Things To Consider Before Contacting Home Security Companies

Do you require extra security? Perhaps you want to feel safer in your home so the you can get a good nights sleep? Maybe you are going away on vacation soon, and are concerned about the safety of your home? If any of these things are true, then you should make it a priority to contact home security companies, as soon as possible.

Their are many different types of alarm systems and home security devices on the market today. It can be confusing to know which one to choose, and what is the right choice you. By doing the proper research and looking into it a bit more, you will have a better picture in your mind of what to expect before you contact the home security companies.

It is a good idea to use caution when contacting home security companies. Unfortunately, there are certain businesses that are not legitimate, and are only looking for your hard earned money so that they can scam you. Make sure you do the proper research so that the company that you decide to go with is a reputable one.

Here are a few things to consider before you contact home security companies.

Learn more

It will help you a lot if you learn more about home security systems. This will allow you to choose the best one to put in your home, by taking into consideration things such as the types of control panels, motion detectors, and what kind of siren. These are all good things to find out more about, so that you don?t leave yourself in the dark. Educating yourself about these points is one of the best things you can do.

Plan ahead

You should produce a plan of your home so that you can get a clearer idea of where you want things to be installed. It is a good idea when you are doing this to put yourself in the shoes of a burglar. What places are they most likely to enter? Finding out these hotspots around your home, will allow you to know which points might need extra security.

The companies

When you do contact home security companies, then do not be afraid to talk to a few of them and get several quotes. You can even get them to come around to your house, so that they can do a professional risk assessment, and this will also allow you the opportunity to ask them plenty of questions. A reputable company will have no problem in doing this for you, and you will be able to tell that they know what they are talking about.

Windows Phone Reaches 30,000 Apps, Opens Marketplace to Mango Submissions

windows-phone-mangoThere are now 30,000 mobile applications available for Windows Phone, Microsoft's newest mobile operating system. That's a huge jump from the 11,500 apps Microsoft reported back in March, but still far short of industry leaders, iOS and Android. For comparison purposes, there are 425,000 iOS apps and over 250,000 on Android, at least according to the latest?official reports. But 30K apps isn't bad for an operating system that's not even a year old?yet, we'd argue.

For depression, relapsers go to the front of the brain

Monday, August 22, 2011

Depression is increasingly recognized as an illness that strikes repeatedly over the lifespan, creating cycles of relapse and recovery. This sobering knowledge has prompted researchers to search for markers of relapse risk in people who have recovered from depression. A new paper published in Elsevier's Biological Psychiatry suggests that when formerly depressed people experience mild states of sadness, the nature of their brains' response can predict whether or not they will become depressed again.

Patients who ruminate and activate the brain's frontal lobes are more likely to relapse into depression than those who respond with acceptance and activate visual areas in the back of the brain. Part of what makes depression such a devastating disorder is the high rate of relapse: each time a person becomes clinically depressed, increases their chances of becoming depressed by 16%. However, the fact that some patients are able to fully maintain their recovery points to the possibility that differences in the way they respond to everyday emotional challenges may reduce their chances of relapse.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine that possibility, researchers presented sixteen formerly-depressed patients with sad movie clips while taking pictures of their brain activity. Over the next year and a half, nine of the sixteen patients relapsed into depression. The researchers compared the brain activity of relapsing patients against those who remained healthy and against another group of people who had never been depressed. When faced with sadness, relapsing patients showed more activity in a frontal region of the brain known as the medial prefrontal gyrus. Responses in this frontal region were also linked to higher rumination scores, the tendency to think obsessively about negative events. Patients who did not relapse showed more activity in the rear part of the brain responsible for processing visual information. Responses in this visual area were also linked to greater feelings of acceptance and non-judgment of experience. Both the frontal and visual responses to sadness were atypical, in that they were not found in people who had never been depressed.

"Despite achieving an apparent recovery from the symptoms of depression, this study suggests that there are important differences in how formerly depressed people respond to emotional challenges that predict future well-being," explained author Dr. Norman Farb. "For a person with a history of depression, using the frontal brain's ability to analyze and interpret sadness may actually be an unhealthy reaction that can perpetuate the chronic cycle of depression."

Dr. John Krystal, editor of Biological Psychiatry added, "Relapse is one of the most vexing problems in depression treatment. Having a biomarker for relapse could guide a new generation of treatment research."

Further evaluation is needed to determine whether the brain's reaction to sadness can predict a person's risk for future depression on an individual, case-by-case basis. It will also be important to examine whether people identified as being at risk for relapse can be trained to change their way of responding to negative emotion or whether treatment strategies can be developed that would target the hyperactivity of this cortical region when processing sad or other negative stimuli.

DeMarco: Mike Stanton, MLB's next great slugger

OPINION

By Tony DeMarco

Tony DeMarco

DENVER - In a week of milestone home runs, you may have missed Mike Stanton hitting the 50th of his career on Tuesday in Coors Field.

It paled in significance, of course, to Jim Thome becoming only the eighth player to reach the 600-homer plateau, or Albert Pujols becoming the first to hit at least 30 in his first 11 seasons.

But let Stanton's blast off Jhoulys Chacin serve notice ? in case you don't already know ? about the game's youngest and next great slugger.

Stanton won't turn 22 until November. Twenty years ago, future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. also reached the 50-career-homer mark at age 21. Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx belted 33 homers as a 21-year-old in 1929; Stanton currently sits four behind him for this season after going deep in four consecutive games through Wednesday.

Ask Marlins hitting instructor Eduardo Perez for comparisons to Stanton's power, and he quickly rattles off two former teammates you may remember ? Mark McGwire and Bo Jackson.

"(Stanton's) ceiling is what he wants it to be,'' Perez said. "He's more advanced as a hitter than (McGwire and Jackson) at this age, without a doubt. He's got all the tools.''

Stanton knows about the company in which he is being placed, and to his credit, humbly says: "You just kinda take it for what it is, and let it be.''

As for the now-51 career homers: "It's a good start, but then again, it could stop now and nothing more could come of it. It's not necessarily how you start a career, it's how you finish it. You can't be satisfied with the beginning of your career, you have to work off of it, and keep going.''

There is no doubt in the minds of Marlins observers that will be the case. On Monday, Stanton hit his longest blast of the season ? a 472-foot shot off Kevin Millwood that hit several rows up in the center-field lower-deck seats, then bounced up onto the concourse.

"We see them all the time,'' manager Jack McKeon said. "That's just routine for us.''

He was exaggerating ? but only a little.

"He can hit 'em,'' McKeon said. "There's no question about that. He stands right up at the top (for young power hitters).''

"Thirty (homers) by accident,'' is how longtime Marlins broadcaster and former big-league first baseman Tommy Hutton puts it. "He hasn't even figured it out yet, and he's got 29 already (this season).

"He's already hit the longest (home run) at Citi Field. As his career unfolds, we'll be talking about all the different parks where's he's hit the longest one. Put him in the Phillies lineup ? like the they just put Hunter Pence in that lineup ? and it would be scary. Put him in that (Citizens Bank) ballpark, and it would be scary.''

And Stanton still is growing. A three-sport high-school athlete in Sherman Oaks, Calif., Stanton is listed at 6-5 and appears to be taller. His listed weight has increased from 235 at signing in 2007 (as a second-round pick) to a still-lean but muscular 248.

Stanton says he doesn't copy any particular hitter, but as you might expect, likes when the Cardinals are on the Marlins' schedule, so he can watch and learn from the at-bats of right-handed sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday.

"You take bits and pieces of what they have,'' Stanton said. "You hope it trickles down to your play.''

Stanton has flip-flopped on his bat selection, but nobody's talking about any mechanical flaws that need correcting, or major weaknesses that are being exploited. Perez ? son of Hall of Famer Tony ? stepped in mid-stream this season, and says he has done little more than make suggestions on the mental-approach side of things.

"You watch a 21-year-old kid play,'' Perez said. "You talk baseball with him. You make sure he knows what he's doing right. And when he does something wrong, you make the adjustment with him.

"He is a quick learner, a gifted athlete, and he's a student of the game. And he isn't just a power hitter. This guy has one of the best outfield arms, too. He's saved a bunch of runs defensively.''

By virtually every statistical measure, Stanton's first full season in the majors is an improvement from 2010, when he posted a .259/.326/.507 line with 22 homers and 59 RBI in 100 games after being promoted in June from Double-A Jacksonville, where he was leading the Southern League in seven offensive categories.

And within this season, Stanton's numbers are getting better. His nine post-All-Star break homers are fourth in the NL behind Ryan Howard, Dan Uggla and Justin Upton. Stanton also has drawn 20 second-half walks ? one off the NL lead shared by Holliday and Carlos Pena through Wednesday.

Part of that is Stanton's increasing patience and plate discipline ? the maturation process bearing fruit.

"I'm not letting pitchers control the at-bats, like they did some last year,'' Stanton said. "More patient, better pitch selection. You gotta trust yourself. You can have a philosophy on hitting all you want, but if you don't take it into 7 p.m. (the game), then it doesn't mean anything.''

And the other part of the rising walks total is opposing pitchers being extra careful with Stanton, who sits in the middle of a decimated Marlins lineup that has been stripped of protection due to Hanley Ramirez's injury-riddled season and the unexpected demotion of Logan Morrison.

Marlins managers have had their issues with the self-absorbed Ramirez through the years, and Morrison's demotion is as much for his run of front-office bashing as a .249 batting average. So the franchise's track record with its sluggers isn't good of late.

But so far, so good with Stanton.

"He'll be as good as his pitch selection is,'' Perez said. "Drawing more walks is the secret to hitting .300. When he starts not getting himself out as much, he can be as good as anyone.''

Down Memory Lane ~ Junie Donlavey -

Bookmark and Share

By PattyKay Lilley

(As posted on our Blog Page in October of 2010) This piece, originally written in 2002 (A Door Closes) and reprinted in 2003, is offered in loving memory of Phyllis Donlavey, Junie?s wife of 68 years. She will be missed by many, but most especially by Junie.

Down Memory Lane ~ Junie Donlavey

In 2002, a door closed, the echo of which is still resounding in the hallowed halls of NASCAR history. On that day, we bade a sad farewell to one of our all-time greats, Junie Donlavey. I?m not at all sure that I possess enough adjectives or superlatives to impart to you my admiration and respect for Junie Donlavey, but I have to try. This warmhearted native of Richmond, Virginia is more than worthy of whatever praises I can sing here, and deserving of so much more.

Junie is an original, in every sense of the word. I tell you often that I am old, but Junie makes me look young, if one is counting years alone. Last year, when his long run came to an end, Junie was 78 years of age, and still showed up at the shop every day, just as he?d done for 53 years. I imagine that he still travels with Phyllis, his wife of 61 years, but now he doesn?t have to wait for the off-season. He can remember from first-hand experience, the beginning of NASCAR. Before Junie closed his shop last year, he was the only active car owner who had an entry in the very first Southern 500, when Darlington debuted as the first ?Superspeedway? in 1950. What a shame that he didn?t have an entry in the last one on Labor Day weekend.

I?d settle in a heartbeat, just to have his memories. From Big Bill France to all those wonderful drivers of by-gone days who built the sport with their talents and sometimes with their lives, and down through the years to the present, he?s known them all on a first name basis, and there is not one who doesn?t honor and respect this hard working, unassuming man.

To say that Junie marched to a different drummer might be an understatement. Admittedly, he loves the sport of auto racing; he willingly spent his lifetime and all his labors within its boundaries. What has perhaps stood over the years to set him apart from all the rest of the drivers and owners is the fact that his team was not a winning one, but Junie never seemed to mind. It?s always been his contention that the joy is in the racing. The competition is the thrill, and it matters very little who wins as long as everyone has a good time. Actually, the statement that his team was not a winning one is not completely accurate. Junie?s car did win a race once, at Dover, in 1981, with Jody Ridley as the pilot. He still refers to the win as embarrassing, since Ridley had been laps down, but running third, when the front- runners, Neil Bonnett and Cale Yarborough, both blew their engines, and he was suddenly an unexpected first. Junie?s feelings on the win were, ?That took the edge off of us winning, to tell you the truth. I understand you take a win anyway you can get it, but I didn?t enjoy it.?

Over the course of the years, 72 different drivers have qualified and run races for Donlavey Racing, and at least 13 of them have been named to the list of the 50 greatest drivers of NASCAR. They are, in no particular order:

Lee Roy Yarbrough
Joe Weatherly
Benny Parsons
DeWayne ?Tiny? Lund
Fred Lorenzen
Bobby Isaac
Ernie Irvan
Ray Hendrick
Harry Gant
Buddy Baker
Buck Baker
David Pearson
Cale Yarborough

If anyone is wondering why 72 men (I think they were all male) chose to drive that familiar #90, it?s because of the way Junie selected drivers. Being a self described, ?People person?, his aim was always to help others, and to that end, his drivers were almost exclusively on their way up the ladder of success or on the way down. His garage was a training ground for young talent, giving them invaluable experience and seat time, until that day when they found a more lucrative ride and bid adieu to Donlavey Racing. In similar fashion, his car was offered to several aging veterans who wanted to race just a few more times before retirement claimed them.

In strange contrast to the corporate monster that has become NASCAR, where contracts are made and broken on a daily basis, Junie?s philosophy was much simpler, and borrowed from another day and time. He proudly proclaims, ?I never in my life had a contract with a driver. If you?re my driver and you don?t want to drive for me anymore, I don?t want you to have to go through a lot of problems to get out of it. You just come and tell me and you?re on your way.? Is it any wonder that young and old alike place this man on a much-deserved pedestal, built entirely out of respect and friendship? How does Junie express his thoughts on all that? ?I?ve had a very good life and made enough friends for 10 lifetimes.? That, my friends, should be the measure of any man, and is what makes Junie Donlavey a winner.

His friends and colleagues have not failed to recognize how much this gentle, caring man has done for them and for the entire sport. In 1998, he was awarded the STP Richard Petty Achievement Award. In 1999, Junie received the Ford Motor Company Spirit of Ford Award, the company?s highest motorsports honor. Also in 1999, he was the recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association/Myers Brothers award. In 2001, Junie Donlavey became only the second person to be awarded the H. Clay Earles award from Martinsville Speedway for his dedication to the motorsports industry. The only other time this award was given was to Big Bill France, the founder of NASCAR. Excellent company to be keeping, I would say.

At the start of the 2002 season, Junie was ecstatic to have lined up something he had always dreamed about, an all-Virginia race team, with himself as owner, Rick Mast as the driver, and C.F. Sauer Co. as the sponsor. Unfortunately, fate or circumstances, call it what you will, had other plans. Driver Rick Mast developed a mystery ailment, diagnosed after months of testing as carbon monoxide poisoning, presenting symptoms such as weight loss and chronic fatigue. Sadly, Mast would retire and not return to racing. Well before the halfway point the season, Sauer announced that they were discontinuing funding for the team. Junie soon found a couple of replacement drivers, but alas, no sponsor willing to back the team that had learned to do so much with so little. Junie announced that the Pepsi 400 in Daytona would be the team?s last race, since funding was completely exhausted. Adding insult to injury, driver Ed Barrier failed to qualify for that race.

Now, I am as much of a realist as the next person, but it?s been difficult to watch the races and not see that familiar #90 among the racers. Certainly, I realize that with the progression of our sport from little dirt bullrings in the southeast to a nationwide gala tour of splendid facilities, seating more spectators than was once even thought possible, the time has to come when change will win out, and tradition will be supplanted. It happens in all walks of life, and I have witnessed my share. The sun still rises in the east, the birds are still singing and the planet is still revolving around the sun, so in that grand scheme of things the change was not earth shattering. Still, when Junie turned that key in the door for the last time, the sound you heard might have been that of a foundation beginning to crumble.

Let me say in closing, I have done my best here to honor a man who deserves it far more than most, but I?m sure it missed the mark by a good measure. It is so difficult for mere words to impart from one person to another, feelings as deep as total respect and complete admiration. I hope I?ve come close.

Mr. Donlavey, Sir, I have taken the liberty of referring to you by your first name several times throughout this writing. Regretfully, I have never had the privilege of meeting you in person, but I learned many years ago about the feeling of ?family? in NASCAR, and it is in that spirit that I employ the familiarity. They say, ?When a door closes, a new door opens.? I pray that has happened for you Sir. No one deserves it more!

Be well gentle readers, and remember to keep smiling. It looks so good on you!

~PattyKay

Scientists clock progress of migrating cuckoos (AP)

LONDON ? They're clocking up thousands of miles (kilometers) as they complete their long journey from England to Africa ? and five migrating cuckoos fitted with tiny tracking devices are providing new information which could help explain a sharp decline in the number of the birds in Britain, scientists said Friday.

The five cuckoos are carrying satellite tags ? which look like miniature backpacks ? fitted before they began their migration from Norfolk, in eastern England, in July bound for Africa's southern nations. Information collected on their route is helping experts learn more about the impact of population growth and climate change on the birds' habitats.

For the first time, scientists are examining where and when the migrating cuckoos stop off on their journey through Africa, hoping to understand more about why fewer and fewer birds are able to make the return trip the following year.

Graham Appleton, a spokesman for the British Trust for Ornithology, which is carrying out the research work, said the number of cuckoos in Britain has fallen by about 60 percent over the last 25 years.

Cuckoos traditionally arrive in Britain in April and migrate again around June or July.

Appleton said that the five birds were captured in large mesh nets ? lured with a recording of a female bubbling call ? and fitted with the 5 gram, solar-powered satellite tags.

"The tags turn on for about 10 hours every two days, and relay information about where a bird is. That will tell us more about the routes the cuckoos take to their wintering areas and where they stop off along the way," he said.

Once they know more about the cuckoos' favored stops, scientists plan to work with colleagues in those countries to examine the possible reasons behind the fall in numbers of migrating birds. "We'll be looking for ways to work with local partners in those areas to look at the impact of population growth on biodiversity and on habitats," Appleton said.

Four of the cuckoos have made swift progress. Two are now in Chad, with other birds in Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

A fifth bird, named Lyster by scientists, remained in Britain until late July, and was tracked on Thursday to the coast of Morocco, about 13 miles (20 kilometers) from Casablanca.

None of the birds have completed their journey yet to the bottom of Africa.

"The satellite tags should last for at least a year, so we also hope to track the birds as they make their return journey to Britain," said Appleton.

Is it Cost-effective to Add a Mechanical Bull to a Party Rental ...

The bucking machine once was something that you would come across at a cowboy bar, something that most people just observed on tv. Lately though, a lot of sports bars and clubs are adding a rodeo bull to their assortment of attractions, right up there with big screen televisions and pool tables. In fact, they?ve gotten so popular that if you own a party rental business, you should be giving serious consideration to buying a mechanical bucking machine.

Rodeo bulls are fun. Almost everyone that tries one is going to have a good time on it, and helping people have a good time is fundamentally what the party rental business is all about. They are all still relatively rare, so a mechanical rodeo bull is likely to give your business an extra serving of notoriety, which is a massive gain for any business. Having said that, not every party rental business is going to find themselves a good fit for renting out a mechanical rodeo bull.

Mechanical Bulls are pretty low-priced in contrast to their potential revenue, but they require an investment of time and cash. Particularly, the mechanical rodeo bull is going to require that you have someone on your employ at the event constantly. If you are a one man or one woman shop, this is something that you need to think about before you make the investment.

Most mechanical bulls are surprisingly compact and easy to set up, but it is generally a two person job, and you?re going to need to have a cargo van if you want to be able to move it easily. There is a little to know about your mechanical bull?s operation, but they are normally very simple to use and really don?t require any specific amount of training to use. A good mechanical bull manufacturer will still ensure you have the education you need to operate the bull safely.

But if your business is set up to manage those types of demands, or you don?t mind widening your business to be able to handle them, getting a mechanical rodeo bull will be a great boost to the majority of party rental bottom lines. You can rent them out for home parties, to bars and restaurants for special events, and even set them up at fairs and carnivals.

There is also very little risk to customers with mechanical riding machines. The machines are set up to be safe, and the operator can regulate both the buck and the spin on them, allowing you to tailor the experience for each participant, whether they are merely a kid or someone looking for anything closer to the real bull riding experience.

The other huge benefit of having a rodeo bull as one of your rentals is that there is a good amount of opportunity to up sell related games and accessories. You can offer up shooting games and rodeo games, or swap out your bull body for a different theme. And obviously many customers will want inflatable games, fun foods or other activities to go with the bull.

The Rodeo Bull Company is the original designer of the multi ride bull. Their web site has a wealth of info on it. In particular, you can learn a great deal about how you can effectively use and market your Mechanical Bull Riding Machine.

ZAWIYA, Libya (AP) ? The day Libyan rebels advanced into the strategic city of Zawiya, Moammar Gadhafi's forces clamped down on the local hospital.

They forced doctors to perform hours of consecutive surgeries, put snipers on the roof and an anti-aircraft gun near the entrance, two doctors who managed to escape said Tuesday.

As the Libyan regime's grip on this coastal city of 200,000 is slipping, stories are seeping out about the reign of fear and intimidation imposed here over the past five months.

Residents interviewed in rebel-controlled parts of Zawiya gave accounts of mass arrests in the preceding months. A woman said her son-in-law and two of his relatives were arrested and killed by Gadhafi agents. A rebel fighter said he was subjected to beatings and electric shocks.

Zawiya had risen up forcefully against Gadhafi when anti-regime protests swept the country in mid-February, but was reoccupied in a brutal crackdown in mid-March.

Rebels pushed into the city on Saturday, but after four days of fighting Gadhafi's soldiers still control about 30 percent of the city, including the hospital and a bank building, said a rebel spokesman, Col. Jumma Ibrahim.

Dr. Hamid al-Shawish, a 30-year-old surgeon, said the regime had clamped down hard on Zawiya since March, arresting anyone suspected of sympathizing with the rebels. At least 20 doctors and nurses were seized from the hospital, and some remain missing, al-Shawish said.

He and a colleague, gynecologist Mohammed al-Kum, said regime forces were a constant presence in the hospital, replacing the director with one of their own and ordering medical staff around.

On Saturday morning, there was an influx of dead and wounded regime soldiers, and civilian patients were ordered to leave the hospital to make room, the two doctors said. Troops closed down the pediatrics and gynecology wards, among others.

The bodies of at least 30 Gadhafi soldiers were brought in that day, along with some 150 wounded, said al-Shawish, who was in charge of the emergency room. Rebels often allege that most of Gadhafi's troops are African mercenaries, but al-Shawish said there were many Libyans among the wounded soldiers.

The soldiers ordered doctors and nurses to stay on their jobs, according to al-Shawish, who said he performed 15 operations between 11 a.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. He said three more surgeons worked on other floors.

Al-Shawish said that while he was working, armed soldiers wandered in an out of the emergency room. "Anyone who was not operating was told to operate," said al-Shawish, but added that he did not have guns pointed at him.

Gadhafi's men posted snipers on the roof and an anti-aircraft gun in a yard, right outside the window of the emergency room, the doctor said. Gadhafi's forces fired randomly at nearby houses, but he did not hear incoming rebel fire, he said.

Al-Kum said he was able to sneak out of the hospital on Sunday. Al-Shawish said he recognized a soldier guarding the hospital gate as the father of an infant he had circumcised. After initially refusing to let the doctor go, the guard relented and let al-Shawish walk out Sunday, with a promise that he would return shortly.

Since their escape, the two doctors have been working at a clinic in Bir Moammar, a rebel-controlled village about eight kilometers (five miles) south of Zawiya.

Anger against the regime runs deep in Zawiya, where residents said regime supporters supplied Gadhafi soldiers with lists of suspected rebel sympathizers to arrest.

Abdel Moez Ramadan, a 20-year-old fighter, said he was imprisoned for three months, suffering beatings and electrical shock during the first 20 days. He said his interrogators demanded that he chant slogans in praise of Gadhafi.

After his release, he fled to the rebels' mountain stronghold and joined the fight to free Zawiya, he said. "I want to take revenge for my country," he said.

Jamila, a 48-year-old housewife, said her son-in-law, along with two of his relatives, was arrested and killed by Gadhafi agents in June. Her 22-year-old son was detained for nine days because he had cell phone footage of anti-Gadhafi protests, said Jamila, who did not want to give her last name for fear of retribution.

With fighting continuing in the city, it was impossible to verify these and other accounts independently.

Jamila said she and her family moved three times since Saturday, and are now staying at a daughter's house on the outskirts of Zawiya. However, she said they might move again, because several rockets struck late Monday in a nearby orchard.

A 15-year-old boy in Jamila's extended family said that during the past five months, he and his classmates were frequently ordered to participate in pro-Gadhafi marches. He said he could not stay away, noting that he knew of others his age who had been arrested, but that in a small show of defiance, he did not join the chanting.

When the hundreds of rebel fighters entered Zawiya on Saturday, the boy said he painted his lower left arm in green, red and black, the rebel colors, and waved at them, because he did not have a cloth flag.

The rebel push came from the south, part of a three-week-old offensive launched from their stronghold in Libya's western mountains dozens of miles inland. With that advance, the rebels made some of their most significant territorial gains in the civil war and are now just 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Gadhafi's stronghold, the capital of Tripoli. Rebel commanders have said they hope to take Tripoli by the end of the month.

Regime soldiers have been pounding Zawiya with Grad rockets, mortar rounds and artillery shells, sending many civilians fleeing south toward the safety of the mountain range. On Monday, 15 people were killed in an artillery strike.

And in a turning of the tables, rebels have begun hunting down Gadhafi sympathizers in Zawiya. On Monday, Khaled al-Azzawi, a 37-year-old teacher, sat at a desk on a sidewalk along the main road into the city from the south, compiling lists of names of regime supporters provided by city residents. Al-Azzawi said some 40 on a list of about 300 had already been arrested.

Several suspects were caught Tuesday and taken to a building next to the Bir Moammar clinic.

On Tuesday, al-Shawish said he believed Gadhafi's 42-year-rule was almost over. "God willing, this is the end, and we will go to Tripoli," he said, as the thuds of mortars and rockets were heard in the distance.

In other rebel gains, Ibrahim, the spokesman, said that fighters also took the town of Tiji, near the western mountain range, on Monday, and were now fighting in the nearby town of Badr. If Badr falls, the rebels will be able to shorten their supply route with Tunisia, Ibrahim said.

He also confirmed that rebel fighters control Zawiya's refinery, which is in the northwest of the city.

As the rebels push forward, there are new efforts by a U.N. envoy to Libya to negotiate an end to the civil war, according to a Tunisian security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Abdel-Elah al-Khatib, Jordan's former foreign minister, arrived in the Tunisian capital of Tunis on Monday for separate meetings with representatives of the Gadhafi regime and the rebels, the Tunisian official said.

The envoy did not identify those he met or say what they discussed, speaking to reporters after a meeting Tuesday with Tunisian Foreign Minister Mouldi Kefi al-Khatib.

However, the Tunisian official said the discussions late Monday centered on a "peaceful transition" in Libya. The rebels reacted angrily to the proposal, with one member of their delegation throwing a shoe during the meeting to show his deep disdain.

The Tunisian security official said the U.N. envoy might also meet with a representative of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Chavez's envoy has been on the Tunisian isle of Djerba for the past few days.

A rebel spokesman in France denied that members of the rebels' interim government, the National Transitional Council, participated in the Djerba meeting. Mansour Saif al-Nasr told RFI radio on Tuesday that "Libyan political personalities" were involved, but not NTC representatives.
