LG Cinema Beam short-throw laser projector and 100-inch screen released in Korea

LG Cinema Beam shortthrow laser projector and 100inch screen released in Korea

One of LG's more surprising product introductions at CES 2013 was its "HECTO" laser projector, which -- when combined with its accompanying 100-inch screen -- is capable of tossing a 1080p image from just 22-inches away. While we'd heard it's coming to the US in March, the projector is out in Korea today branded Cinema Beam TV, available for those ready to drop 9 million won ($8,322) on the package. It has a claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and can accept video via WiDi or Miracast for wireless streaming from a PC or mobile device, while LG also says its laser light source is eco-friendly thanks to a mercury free design and extra long lifetime. The price tag is said to be around $10K when it ships here, apparently the company feels its unique capabilities make it a perfect fit for commercial installations like sports bars, or just high-end home theater customers that value its small footprint.

University of Leeds trials total immersion cooling

The Iceotope system, currently under test at the University of Leeds, uses total immersion technology to cool 20KW of server hardware using just 80W of power.

The University of Leeds is testing a new type of liquid-cooled server which it hopes could dramatically cut the costs and environmental impact of running a modern data centre.

Developed by UK-based Iceotope in partnership with a research team from the University of Leeds' School of Mechanical Engineering, led by Dr. Jon Summers, the new server uses a form of total-immersion cooling using a non-conductive liquid some 1,000 times more efficient at carrying heat than air. Developed by 3M, the Novec liquid sits in contact with the entire system and is itself cooled by a low-energy pump at the base of each cabinet that transfers water - acting as a secondary coolant - to a passive system at the top where it cascades back down thanks to the magic of gravity.

This secondary coolant, which is not in contact with the electrical components of the server, then goes to heat exchangers that transfer the heat to an external loop - using, in an ideal world, 'grey water' sources such as river water or rainwater to reduce dependence on clean water sources - where it is transferred to an external cooling radiator outside the building or re-used to provide heat to other areas of the University.

According to Iceotope's testing, the three-stage system draws just 80W of power in order to cool 20KW of server hardware, making it considerably more efficient than air cooling or traditional liquid-cooling systems. It is also claimed to be extremely efficient at preventing heat from being transferred to the server room itself, reducing the need for expensive HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Cooling) while its insulation of the server's hardware from the surrounding environment means there's little need for humidity control or air purification.

There are, naturally, other advantages to a server room that doesn't need fans. 'The fact that this system is completely enclosed raises a host of possibilities. It does not interact with its environment in the way an air-cooled server does, so you could put it in an extreme environment like the desert,' said the University of Leeds' Dr. Nikil Kapur of the trial system. 'It is also completely silent. You could have it on a submarine or in a classroom.'

Iceotope has grander visions, however: while the technology will start in the data centre, the company has its eyes on the living room. 'More than five years of research, innovation and collaboration have gone into Iceotope's technology. The basic principle of the design has many applications and, while a few years away, there is no reason why every home shouldn't make better use of the surplus heat from consumer electronics,' claimed Iceotope's chief technology officer and inventor of the system. 'Imagine having your PC or TV plumbed into the central heating system.'

Iceotope isn't the first company to experiment with total-immersion cooling, of course: Hardcore Computer's LSS 200 launched last year with claims that data centre customers could save 40 per cent on their cooling bills, even when the cost of the system itself is taken into account, while the company also targeted the gamer market in 2008 with a similar system. Extreme modders have also used non-conductive liquids for immersion cooling, from cheap mineral oil to 3M's earlier Fluorinert product.

With the world's data centres using an estimated 31 gigawatts of electricity - a considerable chunk of which goes into cooling, rather than powering, the machines - systems like Iceotope's and Hardcore Computer's will likely become increasingly popular - and what starts in the data centre inevitably trickles down to the desktop eventually. For now, however, there's just this wonderful teaser video in which the non-conductive properties of Novec are proven with the aid of an iPhone:

Scent of a coral: Symbiosis between two new barnacle species and a gorgonian host

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Two new species of the gorgonian inhabiting barnacles -- Conopea saotomensis and Conopea fidelis -- have been collected from the area surrounding the historically isolated volcanic islands of S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe. The barnacles of this genus are widely spread across the temperate and tropical oceans, but what makes them special is that they occur exclusively in a symbiotic relationship with a gorgonian or black coral hosts. Observations suggest that the barnacles might have a unique ability to recognize and choose a specific host of their preference. The study was published in the open access, peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys.

The islands near which the two new species of Conopea were found are the products of large shield volcanoes originating 3,000 m below the ocean's surface along the Cameroon line. S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe are particularly old islands, 13 and 30 millions of years old, respectively, and form part of the Gulf of Guinea island chain known for its remarkable natural beauty. The islands are home to a large number of endemic birds and plants such as the world's smallest ibis, the S?o Tom? Ibis, and the world's largest sunbird, the Giant Sunbird. Being of volcanic origin and 274 km west of northern Gabon, the islands have never been connected to the African mainland. Such a historical isolation of the area where the new species are found suggests the possibility of endemism.

The newly discovered barnacles are both gorgonian inhabiting. Observations by the authors suggest that they also demonstrate preference to a particular gorgonian hosts. This peculiar behavior is reflected in the name of one of the newly described species, Conopea fideli, referring to the 'fidelity' of the barnacle towards its host of preference. The host gorgonians are a particular type of beautiful octocoral, also known as sea fans. Once locating the host, the barnacle then lives in complete symbiosis with the gorgonian, almost fully covered by host tissue.

To date, not all the details of barnacle larvae settlement and interaction with the gorgonian host are known, but it seems that barnacle larvae are able to choose between the different gorgonians in their search for a host. This rather high degree of symbiotic relationship, almost like a love story, is believed to be mediated by pheromones. It has been demonstrated that barnacle larvae can determine where to settle by recognizing pheromone cues from their host. It has also been shown that gorgonians produce barnacle settlement inducers as well as inhibitors.

The lead author of the article, Dana Carrison-Stone from the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology, California Academy of Sciences, comments: "Although the details of the settling barnacle larvae and gorgonian interaction are not completely known, it appears, from our observations (specifically that Conopea fidelis was found only on Muriceopsis tuberculata) that barnacle larvae may be capable of distinguishing between gorgonian species. Of course, more collections, identifications, and laboratory work testing settlement preference would be needed to answer this question."

Rapid Charging Can Decrease Your Battery's Lifespan (But It Doesn't Matter)

Rapid Charging Can Decrease Your Battery's Lifespan (But It Doesn't Matter)Many USB chargers provide additional power to charge batteries faster. Less waiting is a clear draw, but many say doing so reduces battery life. Technically it does, but not enough to really matter. Green energy site Green Batteries explains:

For practical purposes with batteries that are designed to be quick charged, for example, Sanyo, GP, POWERhaus, that is not true. It is important to use a battery charger that has been specifically designed to rapid charge NiMH cells. Actually there is a much greater likely hood of reducing the life of a NiMH battery by using an "overnight" charger than by using a smart fast charger. Overnight chargers rely on the fact that you will unplug them after a number of hours. If you forget to unplug them they can continue to charge the batteries longer than they should. Overcharging WILL reduce the life of batteries. From a strictly technical sense, a battery that is always slow charged will likely last a little longer than one that is always rapid charged. However, the difference is so small that it is not likely to be noticeable for most users.

Basically, stop charging when your device has reached capacity if you want to preserve the battery's life (as we've noted before). If you can't monitor this manually (as most of us can't when we're sleeping), a power-conserving charger can help (such as the Belkin Conserve series). Either way, don't worry so much about fast charging?just unplug your device when after you're done.

Hot sauce king dies at age 68

By Jane Sutton, Reuters

Paul McIlhenny, the chairman and chief executive of the Louisiana company that makes Tabasco brand pepper sauce, has died at age 68, the McIlhenny Co said on Sunday.

McIlhenny died on Saturday, the family-owned company said in a news release that described him as "a true bon vivant" whose passions included hunting, fishing, wine-tasting and game cooking.

He was a sixth-generation member of the McIlhenny family to live on Avery Island in the southern Louisiana bayou, and a fourth-generation member to produce pepper sauces sold worldwide under the Tabasco brand.

The McIlhenny company was founded in 1868 on Avery Island. It supplies hot sauce to the U.S. presidential plane Air Force One and to Britain's royal family, the Times-Picayune newspaper said on its website.

Paul McIlhenny joined the company in 1967 and directly oversaw the production of its sauces for 13 years, expanding both its line of spicy sauces and the array of aprons, neckties and other merchandise bearing the familiar red-and-green Tabasco logo.

He spent much of his time in New Orleans and in 2006 he reigned as Rex, the first King of Carnival during Mardi Gras celebrations after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

"All of McIlhenny Company and the McIlhenny and Avery families are deeply saddened by this news," said Tony Simmons, president of McIlhenny Co and fifth-generation McIlhenny family member. "We will clearly miss Paul's devoted leadership but will more sorely feel the loss of his acumen, his charm and his irrepressible sense of humor."

Dan D'Addona: Liz Ellis, Hope College women's basketball shooting for redemption vs. Calvin College

A month later, Hope College point guard Liz Ellis still is shaking her head after a dismal shooting performance in a Jan. 12 loss at Calvin College.

Ellis went just 3-for-20 from the field as the Flying Dutch, ranked No. 3 by the NCAA Division III coaches, lost their only game of the season. They get a second crack at their second-ranked rival today at DeVos Fieldhouse.

?There were points of the game where we didn?t have a good flow offensively, and I think I tried to do too much to create things,? Ellis said. ?I dribbled too much or took too many shots.?

Several times, Ellis had the ball at the top of the key with the shot clock winding down and she drove head-down to the basket. It is difficult to get those past Calvin All-American Carissa Verkaik (Holland Christian), who alters many shots she doesn?t block.

If Verkaik wasn?t the one in there, Julia Hilbrands and Breanna Verkaik are tall and good post defenders, too.

Hope has to have a different offensive game plan in the rematch, which tips off at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse. Hope is 23-1 and 14-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

A win for the Flying Dutch will give them a tie with the Knights (22-1, 15-0 MIAA) for the league championship and force a coin toss to see who will host the MIAA Tournament.

?We put Liz in some terrible positions in that game,? Hope coach Brian Morehouse said. ?We asked her to bail us out with the shot clock running down several times. They know how good she is. They didn?t want her to beat them, so they challenged every shot. Those are big kids coming to challenge every shot.?

Ellis has struggled each game at Calvin?s Van Noord Arena ??and she isn?t alone. Hope struggles to hit outside shots in that building and has since it was built. The team?s leading scorer Courtney Kust went 1-for-10 in the loss.

On the flip side, Verkaik, the reigning Division III Player of the Year, hasn?t ever won at DeVos Fieldhouse in her four years.

?It is always great to play at home in front of your home fans,? Ellis said. ?They help us create a positive energy even when things are going wrong. We have a great community that always shows up. In reality, it shouldn?t change how we play, whether we are on the road or here. We are obviously a little more comfortable playing at home.?

It showed last season when Hope lost bad at Calvin, then rallied to stun their rival at home ? without starting center Meredith Kussmaul who was on the bench with a torn knee ligament.

Ellis doesn?t mind thinking about it in the same way.

?I don?t mind going into the game being an underdog,? she said. ?We have nothing to lose. They are not unbeatable. We are a great team when we play together.?

The guard play of Brittany Berry and Megan Kelley should allow Ellis to take the pressure off of herself and spread the ball around. Berry went 5-for-5 from 3-point range in Hope?s win at Saint Mary?s on Wednesday. Kelley had nine points and had her best offensive game of the year at Calvin with 13 points.

?I need to remember we have a great team.? Ellis said.

It doesn?t surprise Morehouse that Ellis felt so bad about the Calvin loss.

?She had a bad game as fall as the ball going in the basket, but she didn?t have a bad game,? he said. ?I didn?t worry one bit about her shooting. I told her she can think about that game and feel bad about it if she thinks about all the games where she put us on her back.?

Ellis, last season?s MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, is choosing to remember that even with her poor shooting, Hope was within five points of the No. 2 team in the nation.

?It actually did give me a little bit of confidence, looking back, that we were that close and didn?t play our best game,? she said. ?Everyone was saying we hung with them ??maybe they hung with us.?

We will find out today which team is better today.

If Ellis can shoot the ball well and the Flying Dutch continue their staunch defensive effort, they will keep Verkaik and the Knights from finding out what it is like to win at DeVos Fieldhouse.
