I went to Hoxton Salon for the first time early in the year. I had read the reviews and they sounded really positive so I thought I would give it a go (and so far I have not found a hairdresser in London that I preferred so it was worth the try).

I had my hair cut and coloured by Natasha. She was really friendly and listened to what style I wanted and what colour I was wanting. She was able to give some some helpful suggestions to ensure that the way the style was cut suited my face and hair type. I got a lovely cup of tea and a tasty biscuit (that was a nice treat).

At the end of it all I had a really nice haircut and beautifully glossy colour. I would recommend Hoxton Salon and if you get the chance ask for Natasha.

Price wise. It was standard but also not overly so. Free fringe trims. Bonus.

Renowned coach Parcells enters Hall of Fame

The job of a football coach is never done.

Parcells recalled the laughter, the wins, the success. ?We?ve got that momentary time of exhilaration where you hoist that championship trophy over your head, and I don?t know what happens, but some mystical blood kinship is formed.?

He also talked of the tough times ? darkness, defeat, despondency, pain. He recalled the times when players were hooked up to IV machines because they were so dehydrated and had to lay in the aisles of airplanes because cramping would not allow them to sit in a seat.

?They don?t put that on television, but I was there to see it,? Parcells said. ?? I wish all of American society could have experienced what I experienced in this place, because, ladies and gentlemen, it is a priceless, priceless education.?

BART labor talks continue as planned strike looms

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Bay Area Rapid Transit managers and union leaders returned to the bargaining table Sunday in hopes of heading off a strike that would create traffic nightmares for San Francisco area commuters for the second time in a month.

Representatives from BART management and the agency's two largest employee unions negotiated for about 14 hours Saturday and resumed bargaining Sunday morning as a midnight deadline loomed.

Big differences remain on key issues including wages, pensions, worker safety and health care costs, but the parties expressed some optimism that an agreement could be reached to avert a strike planned for Monday.

"The parties made some important but incremental moves yesterday, and I hope to get to a deal," Josie Mooney, chief negotiator for the Service Employees International Union 1021, said Sunday before heading into negotiations. "If the parties work very hard, then it's certainly possible in the amount of time we have left."

"There was definitely movement from both sides," BART chief negotiator Thomas Hock said as he left negotiations late Saturday night. "Hopefully, if we keep moving, we will get to a proposal that both sides can agree to."

BART's two largest unions issued a 72-hour notice Thursday that employees would walk off the job if they didn't reach agreement on a new contract by midnight Sunday.

Bay Area agencies are preparing ways to get commuters to work if there's a strike, but officials say there's no way to make up for the BART system, which carries about 400,000 riders a day.

"BART really is the backbone of the transit network. No other transit agency has the ability to absorb BART's capacity if there's a disruption," said John Goodwin, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

If there's a BART strike, transit agencies are planning to add bus and ferry service, keep carpool lanes open all day and even give away coffee gift cards to encourage drivers to pick up riders. They're also encouraging workers to avoid peak traffic hours or telecommute if possible.

When BART workers shut down train service for four days in early July, roadways were packed and commuters waited in long lines for buses and ferries. The unions agreed to call off that strike and extend their contracts until Sunday while negotiations continued.

A strike this week could lead to more gridlock than last month's strike, which came around the Fourth of July holiday when many workers were on vacation.

Bay Area and state officials have been pressuring BART managers and union leaders to reach an agreement this weekend, saying a strike would create financial hardship for working families and hurt the region's economy.

Toronto's Caribbean Carnival parade doesn't disappoint

Thousands of whistle blowing, feather outfitted, vibrant costumed dancers took to Toronto streets to jump, jump, jump with pride at the annual Caribbean Carnival.

Whether it was dropping low to the ground in tune with the heavy bass of soca Caribbean music, or banging on silver painted drum sets, Toronto?s Caribbean community was ready for a party on the city?s lakeshore.

And for one dancer, Toronto?s Caribbean Carnival parade is more than just a celebration of culture, it?s the inspiration for Los Angeles recent festival creation.

?We?ve only had one festival, but we?re looking to make it an annual event in L.A.,? Vashti Ramgoolam, a member of the official Los Angeles Caribbean Festival and a dancer at this year?s celebration, said.

Ramgoolam said she?s been coming to Toronto for years to watch the Caribbean parade,which takes place along Lakeshore Blvd W., south of the Exhibition Grounds, but admitted watching it and being a part of it deliver completely different experiences.

?It?s absolutely amazing,? Ramgoolan said. ?There is absolutely no comparison.?

She isn?t the only one who has been inspired by Toronto?s annual celebration.

Yvonne Chang has been marching in the parade for five years, and three years ago, convinced her daughters to join in. Before immigrating to Toronto, however, Chang was an active participant in the Trinidadian Caribbean festival.

?Our Trinidad culture is very important to us, and Toronto has always supported it so we came here and have been a part of (the parade) ever since,? Chang said.

Although Chang?s two daughters Anna-Lisa Chang, 21, and Michelle Lee Hoy, 28, have never paraded in Trinidad, the two decided to join in three years ago after being tired of just sitting on the sidelines.

?It used to be just our mom but now our aunt and us join in,? Chang said. ?It?s become a big event we do as a family.?

The Caribbean festival has been a staple in Toronto for 43 years. For people who have grown up with the annual festivities, like Mayor Rob Ford, the event brings nothing but smiles.

?It?s always a good time at these kind of events, events like the Caribbean festival. I?ve been coming here for a long time and I always look forward to it,? Ford said.

It?s events like the Caribbean parade that continue to bring money into the city and benefit everyone living in Toronto, he said.

?There are jobs that have been created, and the tourism from the event brings in money to the city,? Ford said. ?It?s a great event.?

This year?s festival was important to more than just one local politician. Premier Kathleen Wynne and recently elected Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter were at the parade today. Both arrived on site at Toronto?s Exhibition Place to cut the ribbon and officially start the parade.

?My mom grew up in the Caribbean and Mitzie is Jamaican, so an event like the Caribbean festival is deeply personal to us,? Wynne told media early Saturday morning.

For many, it?s still the spirit of the Caribbean culture that continues to bring them back.

Although she loves the parade that?s growing in Los Angeles, she knows she?ll be coming back to Toronto year after year to celebrate her Trinidadian heritage with thousands more.

Crew Stadium books easy sellout for U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier

Crew Stadium will host its eighth men's World Cup qualifier soccer match next month, when the U.S. plays Mexico.

Crew Stadium will have a full house for the U.S.-Mexico men?s World Cup qualifier match Sept. 10, and U.S. Soccer could have sold a lot more tickets above the stadium?s 24,000-seat capacity.

The soccer federation declared the match a general sellout Friday, saying it received more than twice as many ticket requests than could be accommodated.

A limited number of VIP packages with premium seats remain, U.S. Soccer said. For information, about them call 312-528-1255 or send an e-mail to supporters@ussoccer.org.

This will be the eighth time Crew Stadium has hosted a World Cup men?s qualifier. As I?ve reported, the stadium has been a lucky charm for the U.S. team, which has five wins and two draws in its seven World Cup matches there.

U.S. Soccer also disclosed its headquarters for the World Cup qualifier will be at Easton Town Center, starting Sept. 6. In addition, the federation will host a rally for the team and fans the night before the match at the Bluestone, an entertainment venue off East Broad Street in downtown Columbus.

Rolling Stone reporter: Boston bomber cover was about 'realizing he was normal'

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Rolling Stone has already defended its controversial decision to put Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover of its July issue, and now the reporter who wrote the cover story, "Jahar's World," is defending Rolling Stone.

Janet Reitman spoke about the issue while appearing on The Longform Podcast posted Friday. While she emphasized that neither she, nor any journalist writing for the publication, has control over whether the story becomes a cover story or what picture accompanies it, she was "very satisfied" with the final product.

"Look, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was the accused bomber number two in the Boston Bombing, was 19 years old. He was the demographic of part of our readership. He fits right into that demographic and I felt that the choice of having his face on the cover was a reflection of the story in the magazine," Reitman said. "The cover says, 'Look at me,' right? And the story is about looking at this person and realizing that this person was very 'normal,' and very much could have been anybody - could have been your friend, that kid you got high with, that boy you had a crush on in your dorm. That's who he was."

Reitman also said that she understands why the cover elicited an emotional response from the public, and thinks "it's great, on a certain level," that it did.

"Terrorism is emotional, it's real, it affects us. It is not something that happens just overseas or just to people who are somehow 'Other,'" Reitman added. "If you talk to terrorism experts around the world, what they will all say is that the vast majority of people who are involved in these violent, extremist acts are what we would consider otherwise to be very normal people. One of us. Part of our community. That's a reality, and it's a very emotional thing and it makes people very uncomfortable. I totally understand that. But that was the point of my story."

Despite a number of boycotts from consumers and carriers, alike, AdWeek reported earlier this week that the story did end up paying off for Rolling Stone.

According to data sourced from the Magazine Information Network, based on point of sales from 1,420 retailers between July 19 and July 29, sales of the issue jumped 102 percent over average per-issue sales for the past year. A total of 13,232 copies were sold, which is more than double of what the magazine's average sales from last year.

In an editor's note, Rolling Stone expressed sympathy for those affected by Tsarnaev's actions, but argued the story "falls within the traditions of journalism."

"The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens," the note concluded.

The network said Thursday at the Television Critics Association meeting that Rajskub will reprise her role as Chloe O'Brien, the faithful counter-terrorist sidekick of Sutherland's Jack Bauer character.

Rajskub joined the original "24" series in its second season and appeared in the second-most episodes of any actor during the show's run from 2001 to 2010.

Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly says he's stopped by fans all the time thanking him for bringing back the Emmy-winning show.

Fox says the miniseries will take up Bauer's story several years after the events of the final season, with viewers following his foreign exploits in real-time.

SEC prevails as jury finds Goldman's Tourre liable for fraud

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A jury found former Goldman Sachs Group Inc vice president Fabrice Tourre liable for fraud for his role in a failed mortgage deal that cost investors $1 billion, giving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission a big victory.

Tourre was found liable on six of seven counts by a Manhattan federal jury, in the SEC's highest-profile trial to spill out of its investigations into causes of the 2008 financial crisis.

"We are gratified by the jury's verdict," said Andrew Ceresney, co-director of the regulator's enforcement division. "We will continue to vigorously seek to hold accountable, and bring to trial when necessary, those who commit fraud on Wall Street."

Tourre left court without talking to reporters.

The SEC had accused Tourre, 34, in a civil lawsuit with misleading investors in a product known as Abacus 2007-AC1 by failing to disclose that hedge fund billionaire John Paulson helped choose, and intended to bet against, mortgage securities underlying the 2007 deal.

It also alleged that Tourre misled ACA Capital Holdings Inc, a company also involved in selecting assets for Abacus, into believing Paulson & Co would be an equity investor in the synthetic collateralized debt obligation.

Paulson went on to make billions of dollars in 2007 betting against the U.S. housing market.

The SEC said he made about $1 billion from his short position on Abacus, while investors including ACA and IKB Deutsche Industriebank AG lost about the same amount.

Tourre is pursuing a doctorate in economics at the University of Chicago after formally parting ways with Goldman at the end of 2012.

Goldman agreed in July 2010 to pay $550 million to settle with the SEC over Abacus, without admitting or denying wrongdoing. Tourre was the only individual charged.

The case is SEC v. Tourre, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-03229.

Stock futures mixed after jobs report

Stock futures were mixed Friday after the U.S. reported that the unemployment rate dropped to 7.4 percent in July, the lowest level in more than four years.

The total number of jobs created, however, was short of most projections by economists and at 162,000 in all, it was the fewest added since March.

Dow Jones industrial futures fell 7 points to 15,543. The broader S&P futures lost a point to reach 1,699.20. Nasdaq futures gained 13.5 points to 3,126.25.

The government also reported the fastest uptick in consumer spending in four months for June.

Consumer spending drives about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, making it a big signal for economists trying to gauge how Americans are felling about their prospects going forward.

Later Friday, the Commerce Department will report factory orders for June. Most economists are expecting brisk activity in the sector.

Alberta oil seep under review

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The Canadian oil company tied to the slow release of oil sands from a remote area in Alberta said it would conduct a closer review of potential site problems.

Oil is seeping to the surface at a slow rate from four sites at the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range in Alberta. It started as the release of more than 6,000 barrels of heavy Canadian crude oil in May and the incident is ongoing at a site operated by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.

Company President Steve Laut told Bloomberg News in a phone interview the company would review operational practices in the wake of the accident.

"What we're going to do is go back and look at the wells in the vicinity of these leakages," he said in an interview published Wednesday. "If we see any imperfections we are going to go back and try to remediate those wells. And if we can't, then when we do steam through those areas, we are going to change our steaming practices to ensure we prevent these kinds of events."

The company used a steam-injection process to heat oil sands to make it easier to move to the surface. An Alberta energy regulator, in an effort to control the seeps, ordered the company to stop using the process.

Canadian Natural Resources said this week it believed mechanical failures led to the incident. It said the seepage was confined to the immediate site and the release from all four areas is less than 20 barrels per day.

Dell's $100 Android Computer Is Finally Shipping

You?d be forgiven for not knowing what Project Ophelia was from a bar of soap, but it?s actually something really special: it?s Dell?s $100 Android computer packed into a tiny, USB stick-sized package. It has been a pie-in-the-sky idea for some time now after its debut at CES, but according to new reports, it?s finally shipping out.

The Ophelia is a curious little gadget that reportedly connects to any HDMI port, turning the screen into a PC, media centre, or gaming console depending on how you?ve customised it.

BGR is reporting that beta testers are getting their hands on the gadget now, with a view to a public release later in the year.

Micro-computers have been particularly popular in recent years with the success of the Beagleboard and the Raspberry Pi solutions, while Android has been twisted and tweaked to appear on everything from TV sticks through to game consoles like the Ouya and NVIDIA Shield. [BGR]

After 5 rejections from Apple, Imgur launches its image-sharing iOS app

A month following the?release of its Android app, popular image-sharing service Imgur has finally launched an official app for the iPhone and iPad after wrangling over approval with Apple.

Imgur is best known for its usage on influential community news site Reddit. Last October, Imgur went from being a place to simply upload images to a destination similar to Reddit where you can browse viral images. It recently launched its own meme generator. The service attracts 4 billion page views and more than 80 million unique visitors each month.

While Imgur has been around since 2009, it is just now getting around to launching mobile apps. It used to leave mobile app development to third parties by offering an open API, but then realized it wanted an official presence on mobile. It also noticed that 35 percent of its traffic now comes from mobile. So its new Android and iOS apps were born.

?We realized the experience in these third-party apps wasn?t that great,? Imgur founder and CEO Alan Schaaf told VentureBeat.

Getting the Android app approved was simple and went off without a hitch, Schaaf said. But the Apple approval process was a headache. Apple rejected the app five times over concerns about copyright violations and crude content.

?Apple didn?t quite understand who we were,? Schaaf said. ?It?s just like many other apps, and we had to explain that we follow all DMCA guidelines. It was a bit frustrating to go through that process but it makes sense.?

San Francisco-based Imgur has not raised any funding to date but is considering it. Imgur has 10 full-time employees.

Marshfield Legion Baseball: Time runs out on Post 88

Post 88 came into the playoffs on the wrong foot, but the Marshfield American Legion Baseball team tried to recover. The tough part for Post 88 was that it did not get the chance to fully recover.

Marshfield, which had trouble in its final two games of the regular season getting the offense going, gave Zone 10 top-seed Brockton Post 35 all it could handle in the teams? best-of-three playoff series.

The two teams fought through rain and darkness curfews, but could not complete the best of three series.

They were tied at one game each, but rainouts on both last Thursday and Friday prevented them from finishing the series. The south sectionals were slated to start this past Sunday, and according to the rules in Zone 10 and the other zones in the south, the team with the higher seed advances on to the sectionals, and that was Brockton.

?It definitely was a tough way to go out,? Marshfield Manager Zack Perry said. ?Unfortunately, the series all had to be completed by Friday.?

The series that started on Monday, July 22, went through out the entire week. It featured a first game that was scoreless after 12 innings and suspended to the next day. What proved to be the tough part of the series was that the next day, Tuesday, July 23, had heavy rain even though the two teams played a scoreless 13th inning at Siever Field in Plymouth.

The first game marathon concluded on the third day. The two teams finally decided the first game in the 14th inning.

The game was completed on a day when Zone 10?s other three series were all completed. The tough part for Post 88 was that after missing scoring chances in the game, which included the top of the 14th, Brockton Post 35 came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning for the 1-0 win.

?We played 14 innings in the first game, and we could not get a timely hit in the game,? Perry said.

The second game was played immediately after the first game was completed at Forges Field in Plymouth, and Marshfield won, 3-1, to even the best-of-three series.

The third game was rained out twice, and Marshfield was the tough luck losing team in the series that was not completed.

The pitching for Post 88 in the series was great. Marshfield got 10 shutout innings from Greg Langer in the first game. He struck out three and scattered nine hits, but got a no decision.

Nick Colafemina was immense in the second game of the series. He pitched a complete game in Post 88?s 3-1 win over Brockton.

?Greg Langer?s effort was incredible,? Perry said. ?He pitched a great game. Nick Colafemina pitched a great game for us in the second game. It was too bad that the series had to be decided by the weather.?

Marshfield came up with its three runs in the second game in the fourth inning, scoring its first run on a D.J. Evans? fielder?s choice with the bases loaded to tie the game, 1-1.

Evan Vigneau slashed a two-run single off of the Brockton third baseman to give Post 88 a 3-1 lead.

US home prices rise 12.2 percent, best in 6 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. home prices jumped 12.2 percent in May compared with a year ago, the biggest annual gain since March 2006. The increase shows the housing recovery is strengthening.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index released Tuesday also surged 2.4 percent in May from April. The month-over-month gain nearly matched the 2.6 percent increase in April from March ? the highest on record.

The price increases were widespread. All 20 cities showed gains in May from April and compared with a year ago.

Prices in Dallas and Denver reached the highest level on records dating back to 2000. That marks the first time since the housing bust that any city has reached an all-time high.

Home values are rising as more people are bidding on a scarce supply of houses for sale. Steady price increases, along with stable job gains and historically low mortgage rates, have in turn encouraged more Americans to buy homes.

Higher home prices help the economy in several ways. They encourage more sellers to put their homes on the market, boosting supply and sustaining the housing recovery. And they make homeowners feel wealthier, encouraging consumers to spend more.

The index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. It measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The May figures are the latest available. They are not adjusted for seasonal variations, so the monthly gains reflect more buying activity over the summer.

Mortgage rates have surged since early May, though the increase would have had little impact on the current report. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has jumped a full percentage point since early May and reached a two-year high of 4.51 percent in late June.

Rates jumped after Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Federal Reserve could slow its bond-buying program later this year if the economy continues to improve. The Fed's bond purchases have kept long-term interest rates low, encouraging more borrowing and spending.

In recent weeks, Bernanke and other Fed members have stressed that any change in the bond-buying program will depend on the economy's health, not a set calendar date.

Since those comments, interest rates have declined. The average on the 30-year mortgage was 4.31 percent last week.

PHOTOS: Beaches Blanketed In Crude Oil After Major Spill In The Gulf Of Thailand

Crude oil has blanketed water and beaches at a Thai vacation spot after an offshore pipeline leaked an estimated 13,200 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Thailand Saturday.

The spill occurred about 12 miles off the coast of Rayong, Thailand, and reached Ao Prao beach on the island of Koh Samet on Sunday. About 1,900 feet of white sandy beach was covered in oil.

The oil prompted an evacuation of tourists staying at the beach, which is popular among foreign and Thai visitors. The operator of the pipeline, PTT Global Chemical, has apologized for the spill and said the leak has been plugged, but as of Tuesday, the company did not know how the leak had occurred ? a matter the company?s president told CNN Tuesday needed ?a lot of investigation.?

The company?s initial estimates that the cleanup would take two to three days have proven too optimistic ? now in its fourth day, the oil is only partially cleaned up and the oil has now spread to nearby smaller islands.

The spill may also be moving towards the mainland Rayong province, a development that the Thai government has been concerned about from the spill?s start. According to the Wall Street Journal, Thai media outlets have reported that thin films of oil and oil residue have been spotted from a beach in Rayong, about 13 miles from Ao Prao beach. As of Tuesday, Rayong?s Muang?s district leader hadn?t received a report of an oil slick but had told his staff to be on the lookout for oil.

Thai authorities have declared the area of Ao Prao a disaster zone and hundreds of Royal Thai Navy personnel, PTT Global Chemical workers, national park officials and villagers are working to remove the oil. Airplanes have also spread chemical dispersants over the spill ? a decision that was a ?last resort? due to windy weather that made the use of oil booms difficult. The dispersants are worrying some in Thailand, however, because PTT Global Chemical has admitted the chemicals could be an environmental or health hazard. Dispersants have been found to be harmful before ? chemicals used to disperse oil from the BP oil spill created a mixture that was 52 times more toxic than oil alone, according to one study.

It?s still unclear how the spill could affect wildlife in the region ? government officials have ordered a test of seafood caught off Rayong?s coast, and an initial inspection of the coral reef located about 300 feet from Ao Prao didn?t find any oil damage. Ply Pirom, a Greenpeace manager in the area, said the region ?can expect an impact on fisheries and from chemical contamination in the food chain.?
