Kremlin 'outraged' by electoral fraud... in Eurovision song contest

Allegations of voter fraud in Russia are nothing new. But this time it's the Kremlin making them.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / May 22, 2013

Winner of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Emmelie de Forest of Denmark who won with her song 'Only Teardrops,' holds the winners trophy as she poses for photographers following the final of the Eurovision Song Contest at the Malmo Arena in Malmo, Sweden, last Saturday. No, it's not the 2011 Duma elections, which experts from across Russia's political spectrum?now agree were probably falsified?on a huge scale. That has never been the subject of official outrage, or even investigation.

This is something far more important: the continental song competition, Eurovision.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists?yesterday?that he was "outraged" to learn that the voting system in neighboring Azerbaijan had eliminated the votes cast for Russian Eurovision contestant Dina Garipova in that country. Voters registering their preferences by cellphone had given a second-place finish to Ms. Garipova ? which should have given her 10 points in the overall contest ? but they had somehow disappeared in the reporting process.

"We can?t be happy with the fact that 10 points were stolen from our participant, primarily in terms of how this event is organized," Mr. Lavrov?said during a previously scheduled joint press conference?in Baku with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.?

"We have agreed with Elmar Mammadyarov that we will discuss joint measures to ensure that this outrageous action will not go unanswered," Lavrov added.

The head of Azerbaijan's broadcasting company, Jamil Guliyev, quickly acknowledged that some sort of mistake had occurred.

"We sincerely hope that this case, which was probably initiated by some groups, would not cast a shadow on brotherly relations of Azeri and Russian people," he told journalists.

Contestant: Why the fuss?

The mammothly popular annual singing contest, held last Saturday in Malmo, Sweden, featured contestants from 39 countries from the Atlantic to the shores of the Caspian Sea. An estimated 125 million TV viewers,?each cheering for their country's contestants as avidly as any football team,?tuned in to the Eurovision finals, plus countless more around the world via Internet streaming.

Competition for the honor of hosting Eurovision is almost as serious as for the Olympics, and?Russia went wild when Moscow won the right to stage the event back in 2009.

The winner of each year's multinational contest is determined by a complicated system ??which is supposed to be foolproof ? in which each country votes for all entries except their own.

Votes cast by TV viewers in each country by cellphone (or through social media such as?Facebook) makes up half the decision, while a national panel of judges makes the other half. At the end of the process, each country submits a ranking for all contestants ? except its own ? by giving 12 points to the winner, 10 points to the runner-up, and so on. The results, totaled for all of Europe, determine the overall winner.

This year Denmark's Emmelie de Forest won by a landslide, with 281 points, followed by Azerbaijan's Farid Mammadov with 234 points (full table?here). Russia's Garipova came fifth with 174 points.

The missing 10 points from Azerbaijan didn't affect Garipova's standing, and she graciously told the Russian media today that?it would be better to drop the rising demand for an international investigation into the alleged vote-rigging scandal.

"To be honest, I don?t know why an investigation is needed," Garipova said. "I am satisfied with the result of the contest."

Inferiority complex

Eurovision's organizers?said in a statement?that they will take swift action to preserve the event's apolitical nature and prevent any future abuses.?But the scandal is far from dying down in Russia.?

Some Russian conservatives claim it's just another example of Western "double standards," in which those who never miss an opportunity to lecture Russia about human rights and democracy turn out to be dirty themselves.

Former Kremlin adviser Sergei Markov told the Ekho Moskvi radio station?today?that the Eurovision result was "direct forgery and fraud."

Perhaps tongue-in-cheek, Mr. Markov went on: "In general it's better when we non-Europeans are accusing them of falsifying elections than when they are accusing us?. And here [with Eurovision] we have such a fraud, and the whole world has seen it with their own eyes."

Viktor Shenderovich, once a top political satirist?who was exiled from the mainstream media?after Vladimir Putin came to power, says the Russian response, and particularly Lavrov's official outrage over a singing contest, is an unseemly display that reveals a persecution complex at the heart of Kremlin behavior.

"This comes from the inferiority complex than haunts our state, which is really funny when you recall that we're a country the size of a continent that has a vast nuclear arsenal," Mr. Shenderovich says.

"When a mature adult from the Foreign Ministry starts taking such things seriously, well, it can only mean that we have lost any sense of self-irony. On the surface it looks silly, but when you examine the roots of this affair you can't help feeling sad?. Whenever Russia feels it's been shortchanged in anything, be it a song contest or a sporting event, our people immediately begin claiming that there's a plot against us. But, as the old Russian saying goes, 'a bad dancer's boots are always too tight,'" he adds.?

Lebanese TV: Syria has received Russian missiles

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian president has told Lebanon's Hezbollah-owned TV station that Damascus received the first shipment of Russian air defense missiles, according to remarks released Thursday.

Bashar Assad's comment on the arrival of the long-range S-300 air defense missiles in Syria will further ratchet up tensions in the region and undermine efforts to hold U.N.-sponsored talks with Syria's warring sides.

Israel's defense chief, Moshe Yaalon, said earlier this week that Russia's plan to supply Syria with the weapons is a threat and that Israel was prepared to use force to stop the delivery.

The Al-Manar TV, owned by the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group, released Assad's comment on the Russian missiles through its breaking news service to clients on Thursday morning. An official at the station confirmed to The Associated Press that the remark was from the interview. The TV is to air the exclusive interview later Thursday.

On Monday, the European Union lifted an arms embargo on Syria, paving way for individual countries of the 27-member bloc to send weapons to rebels fighting to topple Assad's regime. The move raised fears of an arms race in the Middle East.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria in recent months that are believed to have destroyed weapons shipments bound for Hezbollah. It is not clear whether Israeli warplanes entered Syrian airspace in these attacks.

But with the Russian missiles in Syria's possession, the Israeli air force's ability to act could be limited.

Israel has lobbied Moscow over the planned sale of S-300 air-defense missiles to Syria but on Tuesday, Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said his government remained committed to the deal.

The S-300s have a range of up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) and the capability to track and strike multiple targets simultaneously. Syria already possesses Russian-made air defenses, and Israel is believed to have used long-distance bombs fired from Israeli or Lebanese airspace. The S-300s would expand Syria's capabilities, allowing it to counter airstrikes launched from foreign airspace as well.

Monday's decision by the EU paved the way for individual countries to send weapons to Assad's outgunned opponents. The EU's move may have little impact on the conflict since no single European country is expected to send lethal weapons to the rebels anytime soon.

Britain and France, the main military powers in the EU, had pushed for lifting the embargo. They have argued that Europe's threat of arming the rebels in the future would force Assad to negotiate in good faith.

Russia, an Assad ally, harshly criticized Europe's decision to allow the arming of Syrian rebels, saying it undercuts international efforts to bring the opposing sides in Syrian conflict together for a peace conference.

Can backpackers solve Middle East's tourism woes?

Where others give PowerPoint presentations about wooing more souls to a storied land, he wears a faded ?staff? T-shirt with a button that says, ?In fun we trust.? He actively courts travelers who have visited countries at war with Israel, including Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Iraq, and aims to boost tourism to the whole Middle East one backpacker at a time.

Meet Maoz Inon, Israel?s maverick tourism entrepreneur, whose latest venture was just recognized as one of the top 10 large hostels worldwide.

?I believe tourism is a great tool also to create political change, to create a very big impact,? he says. ?Backpackers are the first adopters, so we must target them.?

Mr. Inon?s foray into shoestring travel in Israel began eight years ago in the Old City of Nazareth, one of Israel?s poorest neighborhoods, which was riddled with drugs and not exactly a prime tourist destination ? even for the adventurous. But after he and his wife decided to leave their ?yuppie lives? in Tel Aviv and spent months backpacking along California?s Pacific Crest Trail and later Patagonia at the tip of South America, they had returned home with a mission.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Israel? Take the quiz

?I believe the No. 1 beneficiary should be the local community,? he says, having witnessed firsthand the transformative effect of responsible tourism.

He found a gem of an old mansion in Nazareth?s warren of stone alleyways, and turned its soaring arches and tiled ceilings into the Fauzi Azar Inn, named after the Arab family that occupied it until the 1980s. By creating a free map and daily tours of the Old City, as well as co-founding the Jesus Trail that runs from Fauzi?s steps to the shores of the Galilee, he helped create such a demand that six more guesthouses have since opened up in the Old City.

With visitors from places as cosmopolitan as London and far-flung as Mongolia, he says his inn and its clientele are gradually turning perceptions of Nazareth inside out.

?It is raising the self-esteem of the community and creating a psychological change in their mind,? says Inon, who partners with local businesses ? including other guesthouses ? and organizes home-cooked dinners in a local family?s home for 80 shekels ($22) a head.

?Sustainable business is not about recycling or solar power,? he says. ?It?s about being a profitable business.

And he seems to have a knack for spotting such opportunities. The Abraham Hostel, which he opened in 2010 with several other Israeli backpackers, became a top-ranked Israeli hostel before renovations on all 72 rooms were even completed. In February, the annual Hoscars competition named it the 8th best large hostel in the world ? the only Israeli hostel to get a mention in any of the four categories.

?I believe backpackers are the foundation of sustainable tourism,? he says. ?I see them as the planktons in the ocean that we feed on.?

Wit, grit and a supercomputer yield chemical structure of HIV capsid

May 29, 2013 ? A team led by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has described for the first time the 4-million-atom structure of the HIV's capsid, or protein shell. The findings, highlighted on the cover of the May 30 issue of Nature, could lead to new ways of fending off an often-changing virus that has been very hard to conquer.

Scientists have long struggled to decipher how the HIV capsid shell is chemically put together, said senior author Peijun Zhang, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Structural Biology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

"The capsid is critically important for HIV replication, so knowing its structure in detail could lead us to new drugs that can treat or prevent the infection," she said. "This approach has the potential to be a powerful alternative to our current HIV therapies, which work by targeting certain enzymes, but drug resistance is an enormous challenge due to the virus' high mutation rate."

Previous research has shown that the cone-shaped shell is composed of identical capsid proteins linked together in a complex lattice of about 200 hexamers and 12 pentamers, Dr. Zhang said. But the shell is non-uniform and asymmetrical; uncertainty remained about the exact number of proteins involved and how the hexagons of six protein subunits and pentagons of five subunits are joined. Standard structural biology methods to decipher the molecular architecture were insufficient because they rely on averaged data, collected on samples of pieces of the highly variable capsid to identify how these pieces tend to go together.

Instead, the team used a hybrid approach, taking data from cryo-electron microscopy at an 8-angstrom resolution (a hydrogen atom measures 0.25 angstrom) to uncover how the hexamers are connected, and cryo-electron tomography of native HIV-1 cores, isolated from virions, to join the pieces of the puzzle. Collaborators at the University of Illinois then used their new Blue Waters supercomputer to run simulations at the petascale, involving 1 quadrillion operations per second, that positioned 1,300 proteins into a whole that reflected the capsid's known physical and structural characteristics.

The process revealed a three-helix bundle with critical molecular interactions at the seams of the capsid, areas that are necessary for the shell's assembly and stability, which represent vulnerabilities in the protective coat of the viral genome.

"The capsid is very sensitive to mutation, so if we can disrupt those interfaces, we could interfere with capsid function," Dr. Zhang said. "The capsid has to remain intact to protect the HIV genome and get it into the human cell, but once inside it has to come apart to release its content so that the virus can replicate. Developing drugs that cause capsid dysfunction by preventing its assembly or disassembly might stop the virus from reproducing."

The project was funded by National Institutes of Health grants GM082251, GM085043 and GM104601 and the National Science Foundation.

"By using a combination of experimental and computational approaches, this team of investigators has produced a clearer picture of the structure of HIV's protective covering," said the National Institutes of Health's Michael Sakalian, Ph.D., who oversees this and other grants funded through an AIDS-related structural biology program. "The new structural details may reveal vulnerabilities that could be exploited by future therapeutics."

The US shale-gas revolution and European renewables: Divergence and cooperation in alternative energy

May 29, 2013 ? That the United States and Europe have been following different energy policies over the past few decades won't come as a surprise. However, according to one researcher, their divergence -- with the US leading 'the shale gas revolution' and Europe investing heavily in modern renewables -- is a good thing for the development of both alternative-energy sources.

Writing in the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, Marianne Haug of the University of Hohenheim argues that although the transatlantic energy partners continue to be committed to common goals -- namely energy security, environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness -- the relative priority given to each has changed substantially since the early 1990s. Domestic issues, geopolitical concerns, differing resource bases, changing energy markets, government policy, public opinion, the accession of new countries to the EU and the choices of investors have all altered the landscape. To address these new challenges, both the US and Europe have jointly and separately reached out to new markets, partners and collaboration arrangements.

Haug points to the example of the Kyoto Protocol as a turning point for energy policy. Before the 1997 agreement, which the US did not ratify, energy security was considered the most important of the three goals. After Kyoto, European countries gave higher, if not equal, priority to environmental concerns. European countries entered into partnerships beyond the US to develop low-carbon technologies, such as windmills, photovoltaic units, solar thermal hot-water installations and rapeseed biofuel. The EU also developed emission-trading systems, biofuel targets, energy-efficiency guidelines and standards, which stimulated the market for renewables and the industry as a whole.

In the United States, where the European acceptance of the potential dangers of continued fossil-fuel use is not widespread, public and private investors have spent heavily on shale gas, building on existing fossil-fuel technology. The ability to extract shale gas efficiently could indeed 'change the game' for the US and other countries by contributing to energy security and bringing lower prices. However, the industry is still in its infancy in Europe, due both to stricter regulations and public opinion. This may be changing, at least in the UK: the government stated in its March 2013 budget the intention to invest in its production.

Haug concludes that this parallel development of shale gas in the US and renewables in Europe diversifies and enriches the world's energy-supply choices. They are complementary technology pathways to limit import dependence for both partners and contribute to secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all. They are the result of transatlantic diversification -- initially driven by energy-security then environmental concerns -- through public and private R&D and supportive government policies. Now further cooperation between the transatlantic partners is needed to scale up the development of both forms of alternative energy for the benefit of the global energy community. This article is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the major players' current positions on alternative-energy sources and what the future might hold for global energy supply.

Chile and Argentina on volcano alert

Chile and Argentina have ordered the evacuation of some 3,000 people living near the Copahue volcano in the south of their shared border.

The authorities in both countries issued a red alert - the highest possible - saying the Chilean volcano could erupt imminently.

The 2,965m (nearly 10,000ft) volcano - which sits in the Andes cordillera - has so far only spewed gas.

Thousands of minor earth tremors have been registered in the area.

The volcano, located between Chile's Bio Bio region and Argentina's Neuquen province, has seen increasing seismic activity in recent weeks but has not erupted.

"This red alert has been issued after monitoring the activity of the volcano and seeing that it has increased seismic activity," Chilean Interior Minister Andres Chadwick said in a news conference on Monday.

"There is a risk that it can start erupting."

Argentina revises alert

According to Chile's Emergency Office, the mandatory evacuation affects some 2,240 people living within a 25km (15 miles) radius of Copahue.

However some people refused to leave their homes, preferring to stay with their farm animals and personal belongings.

"No. I do not want to leave because we have chickens and it isn't easy to leave them and go to a shelter," resident Florinda Lipiman told the news agency Reuters.

In Argentina, the authorities had first declared a "yellow alert," but later revised it to the highest level.

They have now ordered the evacuation of at least 600 people from the town of Caviahue to the neighbouring city of Loncopue.

"We are going to go to the homes and we are going to remove the women, the elderly and children," police officer Javier Urrutia Vergara told Reuters.

Last December, Chile also issued a red alert after Copahue - one of the most active volcanoes in the region - began spewing ash and gas, with smoke raising nearly 1.5km in the sky.

Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated, and planes flying over the southern Andes warned to avoid the area.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled last year due to the eruption of another volcano in southern Chile.

The Puyehue eruption caused huge economic damage not only to property in the area but also to tourism in Bariloche and other resorts.

(AP Photo/LM Otero)

(AP) ? Shuanghui International Holdings Ltd. has agreed to buy Smithfield Foods Inc. for approximately $4.72 billion, the largest acquisition of a U.S. company by a Chinese company.

Hong Kong-based Shuanghui owns a variety of global businesses that include food, logistics and flavoring products and is the majority shareholder in China's largest meat processing enterprise. Smithfield, the world's biggest pork producer, owns brands such as Armour, Farmland and its namesake.

Shareholders of Smithfield will receive $34 per share under terms of the deal announced Wednesday ? a 31 percent premium to the Smithfield, Va., company's closing stock price of $25.97 on Tuesday.

Both companies' boards have unanimously approved the transaction, which still needs approval from Smithfield's shareholders. The transaction may also be subject to review by the U.S.'s Committee on Foreign Investment, which evaluates the potential national security effects of transactions. The process typically includes a 30-day initial review, followed by a 45-day investigation before making a recommendation to the president.

Chinese investment in the U.S. is still comparatively low but has risen sharply in recent years. China has accused the U.S. of discriminating against its companies, although analysts say American firms face bigger obstructions investing in China.

The companies put the deal's total value at about $7.1 billion, including debt. Smithfield Foods has about 138.8 million outstanding shares, according to FactSet. Smithfield's stock will no longer be publicly traded once the deal closes.

Its shares surged $6.50, or 25 percent, to $32.47 in midday trading Wednesday.

Shuanghui has 13 facilities that produce more than 2.7 million tons of meat per year. Under the agreement, there will be no closures at Smithfield's facilities and locations, including its Smithfield, Va., headquarters in the historic southeastern Virginia town of about 8,100 where it was founded in 1936, the companies said.

Smithfield's existing management team will remain in place and Shuanghui also will honor the collective bargaining agreements with Smithfield workers. The company has about 46,000 employees.

"This transaction preserves the same old Smithfield, only with more opportunities and new markets and new frontiers," Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said in a conference call. "This is not a strategy to import Chinese pork into the United States ... this is exporting America to the world."

"People have this belief ... that everything in America is made in China. Open your refrigerator door, look inside. Nothing in there is made in China because American agriculture is the most competitive and efficient in the world. This is the one place America can absolutely compete," he said.

With China and the U.S. being "the most important markets," Zhijun Yang, managing director of Shuanghui, said in a conference call with investors, "together we can be a global leader in animal protein. ... no other combination has such a great opportunity."

Foreign food, such as milk powder from New Zealand and vegetables from neighboring Asian countries, is prized by Chinese consumers because of frequent domestic food safety scandals.

Among the most notorious, six babies died and 300,000 were sickened in 2008 from drinking infant formula and other dairy tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.

Shuanghui's reputation was battered in 2011 when state broadcaster CCTV revealed its pork contained clenbuterol ? a banned chemical that makes pork leaner but can be harmful to humans.

In recent months, Continental Grain Co., one of Smithfield's largest shareholders, has been pushing Smithfield to consider splitting itself up, saying it was time for the company to "get serious about creating shareholder value." Following a March letter from Continental Grain, Smithfield said it would review the suggestions "in due course." Representatives from Continental Grain did not immediately comment on the deal announced Wednesday.

In its most recent quarter, in March reported its net income rose more than 3 percent, helped by gains in hog production, its international business and its packaged meats such as deli meats, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs ? a large growth area for the company.

Still pork producers like Smithfield have been caught in a tug of war with consumers. The company needs to raise prices to offset rising commodity costs, namely the corn it uses for feed. But consumers are still extremely sensitive to price changes in the current economy. By raising prices, Smithfield risks cutting into its sales should consumers cut back or buy cheaper meats, such as chicken.

The Smithfield deal including assumed debt would eclipse a Chinese purchase of a stake in a big U.S. investment firm as well. In December 2007, China Investment Corp. bought a 9.9 percent stake in Morgan Stanley valued at $5.6 billion, according to research firm Dealogic.

Novel disease in songbirds demonstrates evolution in the blink of an eye

May 28, 2013 ? A novel disease in songbirds has rapidly evolved to become more harmful to its host on at least two separate occasions in just two decades, according to a new study. The research provides a real-life model to help understand how diseases that threaten humans can be expected to change in virulence as they emerge.

"Everybody who?s had the flu has probably wondered at some point, 'Why do I feel so bad?'" said Dana Hawley of Virginia Tech, the lead author of the study to be published in PLOS Biology on May 28, 2013. "That?s what we?re studying: Why do pathogens cause harm to the very hosts they depend on? And why are some life-threatening, while others only give you the sniffles?"

Disease virulence is something of a paradox. In order to spread, viruses and bacteria have to reproduce in great numbers. But as their numbers increase inside a host?s body, the host gets more and more ill. So a highly virulent disease runs the risk of killing or debilitating its hosts before they get a chance to pass the bug along. It finds the right balance through evolution, and the new study shows it can happen in just a few years.

Hawley and her coauthors studied House Finch eye disease, a form of conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma gallisepticum. It first appeared around Washington, D.C., in the 1990s. The House Finch is native to the Southwest but has spread to towns and backyards across North America. The bacteria is not harmful to humans, which makes it a good model for studying the evolution of dangerous diseases such as SARS, Ebola, and avian flu.

"There?s an expectation that a very virulent disease like this one will become milder over time, to improve its ability to spread. Otherwise, it just kills the host and that?s the end of it for the organism," said Andr? Dhondt, director of Bird Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and a coauthor of the study. "House Finch eye disease gave us an opportunity to test this?and we were surprised to see it actually become worse rather than milder."

The researchers used frozen bacterial samples taken from sick birds in California and the Eastern Seaboard at five dates between 1994 and 2010, as the pathogen was evolving and spreading. The samples came from an archive maintained by coauthor David Ley of North Carolina State University, who first isolated and identified the causative organism. The team experimentally infected wild-caught House Finches, allowing them to measure how sick the birds got with each sample. They kept the birds in cages as they fell ill and then recovered (none of the birds died from the disease).

Contrary to expectations, they found that in both regions the disease had evolved to become more virulent over time. Birds exposed to later disease strains developed more swollen eyes that took longer to heal. In another intriguing finding, it was a less-virulent strain that spread westward across the continent. Once established in California, the bacteria again began evolving higher virulence.

In evolutionary terms, some strains of the bacteria were better adapted to spreading across the continent, while others were more suited to becoming established in one spot. "For the disease to disperse westward, a sick bird has to fly a little farther, and survive for longer, to pass on the infection. That will select for strains that make the birds less sick," Hawley said. "But when it gets established in a new location, there are lots of other potential hosts, especially around bird feeders. It can evolve toward being a nastier illness because it?s getting transmitted more quickly."

House Finch eye disease was first observed in 1994 when bird watchers reported birds with weepy, inflamed eyes to Project FeederWatch, a citizen science study run by the Cornell Lab. Though the disease does not kill birds directly, it weakens them and makes them easy targets for predators. The disease quickly spread south along the Eastern Seaboard, north and west across the Great Plains, and down the West Coast. By 1998 the House Finch population in the eastern United States had dropped by half?a loss of an estimated 40 million birds.

Bird watchers can do their part to help House Finches and other backyard birds by washing their feeders in a 10 percent bleach solution twice a month.

AP PHOTOS: South Africa: children learn by playing

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Hundreds of South African children celebrated what some children's advocates call World Play Day on Tuesday, romping with toys at two Johannesburg centers run by a non-profit organization.

The Cotlands organization campaigns for improvement in early education in South Africa, where a 2010 general household survey released by a government-backed statistics agency showed only 32 percent of children under 5 had access to early childhood development programs.

The biggest challenge for the organization is convincing families that it wants to introduce children to early learning skills, and is not a haven for neglected or abused kids, said Lois Moodley, Cotlands' marketing manager. It runs a child care unit that houses abandoned children up for adoption, and coordinates with child welfare services run by the state.

Individuals and day cares with no access to play areas partner with the center, which provides a two-hour morning lesson, meal, playtime and access to a nurse and social worker at no additional cost. It costs the center R25 (about $2.50) daily to provide for each child, which it funds through corporate and private donations. The doors remain open for after-school play activities.

World Play Day is in its 14th year and is commemorated on May 28 as part of an advocacy campaign for early childhood education. It was started by a non-profit group, The International Toy Library Association.

Cotlands used to run an HIV hospice in 1996 to address the increasing problem of children born with the virus that causes AIDS in South Africa, which claimed 98 children at the non-profit group in 2002. The state later stepped up funding for anti-retroviral drugs, and infection rates have dropped.

At the peak of the AIDS crisis, the disease killed a child in the organization's care every week, Moodley said. In the last three years, she said, "we haven't had a single child die."

(AP) ? France's first gay couple to marry have said "oui" in a politically charged ceremony in the southern city of Montpellier. The two men sealed the deal with a lengthy smooch.

Hundreds of invited guests, including a government minister, gathered for the ceremony, which was broadcast live to the country. Hundreds more flocked to the square outside the building.

Montpellier Mayor Helene Mandroux, who officiated, called the law that legalized gay marriage "a stage in the modernization of our country."

Bombings, clashes kill 11 in Iraq wave of violence

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Bombings and gunfire in central and northern Iraq killed at least 11 people and wounded 35 others on Tuesday, officials said, in the latest bloody chapter of a wave of violence that has edged the country closer to all-out internal warfare.

A day earlier, 70 people were killed, and more than 450 have died this month. Most of the attacks are sectarian in nature, with Sunni and Shiite areas targeted frequently.

The sudden spike in bloodshed is reminiscent of the upheavals of the last decade, when U.S. forces were still in Iraq in large numbers. The sectarian carnage has resumed with new ferocity since the last U.S. troops withdrew last December.

Tuesday's violence spread across the country.

A bomb explosion inside a bus killed five commuters in Sadr City, a poor Shiite district in the Baghdad's east, a police officer said. Five policemen and 20 civilians were wounded.

In the town of Tarmiyah north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber set off his explosives-laden truck after passing a police checkpoint, killing a policeman and a civilian, police said. Nine people were wounded.

In the northern city of Mosul, clashes erupted out between police and gunmen, killing three policemen, two officers said. Four gunmen were killed and 15 others arrested. South of Mosul, a bomb hit a police patrol, killing an officer and wounding another, police said.

Mosul, about 360 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Baghdad, is a former stronghold of Sunni militants.

Three medical officials confirmed the casualties. All spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information to reporters.

No one has claimed responsibility for the recent wave of attacks, but such systematic bombings bear the hallmarks of Sunni insurgents under the leadership of the al-Qaida branch in Iraq, known as the Islamic State of Iraq. They appear aimed at drawing the country's majority Shiites into an exchange of attacks like that which brought the country to the brink of civil war in 2006-2007.

On Monday, more than a dozen car bombs hit commercial areas in mostly Shiite areas of the Iraqi capital, killing 71 people and wounding nearly 200.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki charged that the motive behind the current flare-up was to return Iraq to the "dark days" of the past decade. He vowed to hunt down all militant groups, regardless of their religious and political affiliations.

"The recent attacks that killed dozens of innocents expose the criminal intentions and the goals of the terrorist organizations to send Iraq back to sectarian fighting," al-Maliki told reporters in Baghdad.

On Tuesday, U.N. envoy Martin Kobler pressed Iraqi leaders to do more to halt the violence, saying it is "their responsibility to stop the bloodshed now."

Kobler has repeatedly urged Iraqi officials to engage in dialogue as violence and political tensions have increased in recent weeks.

He warned political leaders Tuesday that "the country will slide into a dangerous unknown if they do not take immediate action."

Why I started writing online | Beyond Life's Challenges

I have had an online writing presence ever since I was encouraged by an acquaintance and fellow military veteran to sign up with Associated Content with a piece I wrote on Veterans? Day nearly five years ago called ?Thank You for Your Service: My Promise to All Veterans.?? Associated Content was bought out and is now called the Yahoo! Contributor Network and I?ve seen a lot of changes in the site.

I started writing online to give myself a ?voice.?

Throughout my life, I?ve been accused of talking too much about things that should not be talked about and being too confrontational. Most saw this as ?attitude? when it was actually my personality. Consequently, I took? a lot of criticism.

?You talk too much,? ?You have diarrhea of the mouth,? ?Why must you always have an argument?? and ?Must you always ask ?why??? were comments and questions I?ve heard many times over the last 50+ years from people who simply wanted to change me.

Quiet me. Control me. Beat me verbally into submission.

I had rarely felt that others listened to what was beneath the words. I was careful not to question certain people, as ?Why?? was not well-received in my family, in the military, nor in several of the companies for which I?ve worked.

But I could not help myself. It is part of who I am at the very core.

Curious. Challenging. Wanting to learn and understand.

It was not until much later in my life that I learned that most of the time the people who were most uncomfortable with me were people who were unsure of themselves.? They did not want to be challenged because they had no answers, nor were they comfortable with being able to ?agree to disagree.?

What I also learned later in life is that I did not often speak my truth.? I was careful not to make others uncomfortable or to ask questions to make them think. I learned to ?be quiet,? even though I was still quite loquacious.

I have similar stories from my younger days where writing is concerned, graded with high marks for spelling, grammar and the like; yet, I was marked down considerably for content that did not fit the ?norm? or that was written in such a way to pose a challenge.

It was when I challenged myself and attended university in my mid-40s that I started to blossom.

Although I met some professors who did not share my beliefs and values and did not particularly care for my challenging nature and also tried to ?quiet me,? I saw a marked change in my being free to share my opinions and my questioning.? There were equally as many professors who were quite adept at returning the volley in a way that energized me.

And volley they did!

I have found that the Internet is another place where there are people who are also capable of returning the volley!? I am able to share my thoughts, opinions and much more without as much fear of the criticism

Yes, I still receive a lot of criticism. But I have been able to say what I need to say with much more confidence.? Doing so in writing has allowed me to find my ?voice,? able to talk about the things I think are important in a manner that is true to my personality. It has also helped me to develop similar skills in the way that I deliver the spoken word.

And I began to find others who think like I do. Not always in agreement with the content, but in concert with the right to say it. Friendship. Camaraderie. Like-mindedness. My cohorts.

My Tribe.

Now I am in the company of people from around the world who speak their minds.? Engage in conversation and philosophical debate. Who encourage me to do so.? Some like what I have to say and tell me. Others do not and also tell me.

I think this is a pretty good reason to continue to write online here on my blog and to find other avenues continue to speak what I think needs to be said.

From my head. From my heart.

Using my voice.

A message from the author:

To read my original ?Thank You for Your Service,? if you do a search for the title and my name, it will take you directly to the article.? From that article, you can find many other things that I have written in the early years online.? Let me know by commenting at the content that you? have stopped by.

And if you would like to speak your mind and use writing as a way to do it, I have recently been introduced to a new site that allows us to do so and get paid to do it. Each submission requires only 400 characters, not 400 words.? I have seen greater success in 5 days with 5 submissions than I have in other places I?ve written? over several months.? I encourage you to at least check the site out,? read the rules, sign up and try it out.? Bubblews ? A place you can ?Speak freely. Write your world.?

You, too, might just find YOUR voice.

Re: Travel insurance?

Rawfa, my experience. In all these countries in the last few years has been very good.

But take what I say with a grain of salt. One look at me, and others think I am out to snatch their stuff. Not the other way around.

But for your peace of mind...just the most expensive stuff.

Are you ( personally ) insured? You seem to care more for your equipment than yourself!,,

Have a safe and great trip. My best wishes to the bride and groom.

Outdoor Power with Home Depot | Honea Express

Boys Hose

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

We rent, which means there is a fine line between the amount of work and investment we want to put into our yard and how frowzy we are willing to let it get. Our landlord, unfortunately, has no qualms about the latter, and aside from an occasional mowing we are generally on our own.

Luckily, my family enjoys a good project and working with our hands?meaning we hardly had to bribe the kids at all. It?s that fun!

Boys at Work

Early photographic evidence of the boys working on stuff.

We decided that something we could do together, and for very little money, was to build some mounted flower beds on the end of the house and fill the patch of dirt and weeds that pass as desert chic with a sustainable garden and/or salad bar for the many rabbits currently residing in the area.

unkept house

Exhibit A: The ugly end of the house.

planting garden

This is where the bunnies will brunch.

However, a lingering winter and a cool spring coupled with busy schedules and another excuse for laziness kept us from maintaining the property as well as we should have, and in our absence the wildlife has flourished. Also, grime. The place is filthy, and before we can build it up we need to wash it down. Hence my looking for outdoor power equipment, specifically a hot water pressure washer at my local Home Depot?apparently a pressure washer hose packs more punch than the garden variety we have curled up in the corner (possible exceptions include top photo). Who knew?

This just in, Home Depot does not mess around when it comes to outdoor power. For instance, the DEWALT Pro Pressure Washers (4,200 psi pictured) look like they could really leave a mark? I mean clean really well!

The Simplest Flashlight Is Just a Rolled Up Piece of Paper

A flashlight is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it's probably plastic and/or filled with DD batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.

Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There's a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It's not the first paper-light design we've ever seen, but it's definitely the most wonderfully simple.

As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere. But let's face facts; it probably wouldn't be a very good flashlight. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a flashlight that could hide, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better. [Designboom]

Graduates in tornado-raked Oklahoma town vow to stay

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Seven tornadoes have swept through their town since they were born, but as new graduates donned caps and gowns to say goodbye to their high schools Saturday, they vowed they wouldn't say goodbye to Moore.

"I wouldn't want to be in any other place. It's our roots. Tornadoes are a part of life here," said 18-year-old Brooke Potter, whose current college aspirations take her to two neighboring towns.

Saturday's graduations for Westmoore, Southmoore and Moore high schools are another step toward normalcy for this Oklahoma City suburb ravaged by an extremely strong tornado. Monday's twister killed 24, including seven children at Plaza Towers Elementary School.

"I want to end up back here," Madison Dobbs, 18, said. "I've been here my whole life and can't picture myself anywhere else. Tornadoes happen anywhere."

While that's true, few other places have the amount and severity of tornadoes like Oklahoma ? and no other place has had a tornado like Moore. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman says the Oklahoma City area has been struck by more tornadoes than any other U.S. city, citing records that date to 1893.

When the current graduating class was in second grade, Moore experienced an EF4 tornado with winds approaching 200 mph. And three months before they started pre-kindergarten, a twister with the highest winds on record ? 302 mph ? sliced through their town.

"Crazy storms happen; the goods outweigh the bads," said Potter, who wants to attend Oklahoma City Community College, and then transfer to the University of Oklahoma in neighboring Norman.

With graduates wearing red, blue or black caps and gowns, Westmoore was the first of three schools to hold commencement ceremonies Saturday at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

A teacher in the district said despite being big enough to have three high schools, the 56,000-strong community is still tightly knit.

"This is such a big district, but this is a small town," said Tammy Glasgow, a second-grade teacher at Briarwood Elementary, which was also destroyed but didn't have any deaths. "When you see somebody in the street, it's not a 'hi' and a handshake, it's a hug."

Some students lost everything in the violent storm. Southmoore senior Callie Dosher, 18, said she sifted through the debris of her family's destroyed home in the past few days, looking to recover precious possessions ? her mom's two Bibles and the teddy bear Callie's granddad gave her shortly before he passed away.

But Dosher, too, wants to stay: "These people, I've grown up with them. I have all my friends here," she said.

Miranda Mann, an 18-year-old Southmoore grad whose family also lost their home, couldn't recognize her own neighborhood because of the damage. Yet the family has vowed to rebuild on the same ground.

"We loved the house we were in," she said. "But we get to make new memories in the new house."

Westmoore Senior Alex Davis, 18, will attend University of Oklahoma after graduation partly so he can stay close to friends and family.

"It speaks to how the community's banded together," he said. "We're not going to let a natural disaster beat us."
