TCA: Josh Hartnett, Eva Green join Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful'

By Tim Molloy

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Josh Hartnett and Eva Green have joined Showtime's Victorian monster show "Penny Dreadful."

Hartnett will play Ethan Chandler, a fake American cowboy who impresses Victorian women, but has a dark side, Showtime president David Nevins said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Tuesday.

Green plays Vanessa Ives, "sort of the fulcrum of the show," he said. The network describes her as a "seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger."

The series is expected to go into production in October, and may air by spring 2014.

The eight-episode series from "Skyfall" team Sam Mendes and John Logan finds characters such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and characters from "Dracula" in Victorian London, weaving together classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation. Pippa Harris also executive produces.

"The monsters aren't going to look like the traditional pictures in your mind you have from old movies of Dracula or Frankenstein," Nevins said.

Juan Antonio Bayona, director of "The Orphanage" and "The Impossible," has been tapped to direct the first two episodes.

Showtime also announced that Golden Globe nominee Ruth Wilson has been cast as the female lead of its drama pilot "The Affair." She will play Alison, a young married woman working in a pancake house, trying to regain her life after a tragedy. Golden Globe nominee Dominic West has been previously announced as Noah, a father of four who makes her Ruth question her decisions.

8 Things iPad mini Buyers Need to Consider

Apple?s iPad mini, released last November, remains one of the best options in the 7-inch range of tablets and thus, it?s likely a device that many shoppers are thinking about buying. Before buying the current iPad mini though, there are a number of things that buyers must consider.

In July of last year Google struck first, launching its Nexus 7 tablet, a device that ushered in the Jelly Bean era of Android and a device that went on to have a solid one year life span. What the Nexus 7 also did was start a battle between three big name companies in the 7-inch tablet realm. For several months, the Nexus 7 was on shelves, unopposed. However, later in the year, Apple and Amazon both joined the fray.

iPad mini buyers need to consider a host of things before buying Apple's 7.9-inch slate.

iPad mini buyers need to consider a host of things before buying Apple?s 7.9-inch slate.

In September, it was Amazon that released its Kindle Fire HD, a high-end yet inexpensive upgrade to its original Kindle Fire and a device that was clearly aimed at tackling the Nexus 7 and its success. That launch was followed a few months later by Apple?s November release of its iPad mini, a device that had been stuck in the rumor mill for years but finally made an official appearance.

Like rumors suggested, the iPad mini arrived with a 7.9-inch display and a design that took after the iPhone 5?s aluminum back. The device checked in with a more expensive price tag than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, starting at $330 and going all the way up to $670 for the 64GB version of the iPad mini LTE.

The iPad mini, despite its age, remains a solid option for tablet buyers and one that those in the market for a new slate should consider. However, this is 2013, not 2012 and there are some important things that iPad mini buyers need to consider before buying Apple?s smaller iPad.

iPad mini 2

The iPad mini 2 is rumored for later this year.

The iPad mini 2 is rumored for later this year.

The first thing that prospective iPad mini buyers must consider is the new iPad mini which is expected to make its debut sometime this fall. Apple?s iPads, over the years, have seen incremental improvements and the same should be expected from the new iPad mini. Rumors suggest that the device will come with a thinner design, improved camera, and a better processor that should help with battery life and gaming.

However, maybe the most important aspect of the iPad mini 2 that buyers need to think about before buying the iPad mini is that it will likely come with a Retina Display. This is huge.

Arguably the biggest flaw of the iPad mini was its lack of a Retina Display, something that came to the larger iPad several years ago. A Retina Display would mean better looking photos, video and more and it?s likely the most sought after feature of a new iPad mini.

Apple tends to cater to its buyers so while there are rumors that an iPad mini with Retina Display could be pushed to 2014, it?s more likely that we?ll see it launch this fall.

No release date is known but given that the iPad mini was released in November, that?s a good time frame to think about. A three month wait for a exponentially better display, and tablet, is probably worth it to many buyers at this point.

Google?s Nexus 7

Buyers also must consider Google?s new Nexus 7 tablet which emerged from hiding just a few short days ago and unlike the next iPad mini, is readily available on shelves.

The Nexus 7 is a vast improvement over the last version as it not only brings a 7-inch screen that is miles ahead of the iPad mini?s display but it also adds a sleek lightweight design, the latest version of Android, a good camera, 4G LTE data speeds that can be accessed on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon and a price tag that undercuts the iPad mini in every way possible.

The new Nexus 7 is a device that potential iPad mini buyers must consider.

The new Nexus 7 is a device that potential iPad mini buyers must consider.

The iPad mini starts at $330, it hasn?t seen a price drop since its debut, while the Nexus 7 starts at $100 cheaper for its 16GB model Wi-Fi model. The 32GB model is only $50 more expensive while Apple charges $100 more. As for the LTE Nexus 7, which isn?t out yet, it will cost $350 which is $130 less than Apple?s 16GB iPad mini LTE. The Nexus 4 LTE only comes in 32GB form.

So the Nexus 7 has better specs, more wide-range LTE support and a price tag that undercuts the iPad mini. Plus, it?s available now. Indeed, this is something that iPad mini buyers need to consider.

Kindle Fire HD 2

On the heels of the Nexus 7 launch comes a huge Kindle Fire leak that includes news of a Amazon Kindle Fire HD 2, the rumored successor to the original Kindle Fire HD. Whether or not this was a controlled leak is unknown but it?s clear that Amazon?s Kindle Fire HD 2 is going to be a serious competitor to the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini.

While it only exists in rumor now, BGR?s information about the Kindle Fire HD 2 is likely credible given its track record. What this means is that consumers will more than likely be starring down a new Kindle Fire HD 2 that will come with a 1,920 x 1,200-pixel display, a Qualcomm 800 quad-core processor which is more powerful than the Nexus 7?s, 2GB of RAM, and both Wi-Fi and LTE models.

The Kindle Fire HD 2 is on tap for 2013 it seems.

The Kindle Fire HD 2 is on tap for 2013 it seems.

What?s more is that the Kindle Fire HD 2 may stay in the same price range as the company?s previous models, while also coming in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB form. That could mean that Amazon undercuts both the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 with a $199 starting price point.

Pop quiz time: How much do you know about student debt?

On July 1, interest rates on Stafford student loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent because Congress could not come to an agreement before the July 1 deadline.

According to a New York Times editorial, "This increase in costs comes at a time when college debt has already reached record levels, damaging the economy and hobbling young graduates. It also draws attention to the fact that the federal government is making quite a lot of money from the loan program. An analysis by the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the new, higher rate would earn the government about $184 billion over the next decade, after taking into account program costs, including potential defaults."

But Wednesday, by an 81-18 vote, the Senate approved a bill to tie federal college loan rates to financial markets and offer borrowers lower rates this fall, essentially rolling back the July 1 interest rate hike. The bill is expected to gain approval from both the GOP-controlled House and President Obama.

So how much do you know about the state of student loan debt in the U.S.?

Take this quiz and find out.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]For the first time since exoplanets, or planets around stars other than the sun, were discovered almost 20 years ago, X-ray observations have detected an exoplanet passing in front of its parent star. An advantageous alignment of a planet and its parent star in the system HD 189733, which is 63 light-years from Earth, enabled NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency's XMM Newton Observatory to observe a dip in X-ray intensity as the planet transited the star.

How Mercedes-Benz R&D is using Google Glass (an inside look!)

Vicki Thompson

In the lobby of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, President & CEO Johann Jungwirth shows off a touchscreen system for visitors to look up employees and alert them of their arrival through an email, call or text message.

Five years ago, having Google dictate precise directions from a reliable smartphone app was still a pipe dream.

Today, Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) is working on a way to take advantage of the search engine giant's newest device equipped with GPS: Google Glass.

I took a tour of one of MBRDNA?s Palo Alto workshops, where I tried out a Glass GPS prototype and a host of other in-car ?infotainment? systems.

The R&D arm of German luxury auto company Mercedes-Benz ? a division of Daimler AG ? will be consolidating and expanding its existing 150-person Silicon Valley presence in a new Sunnyvale office later this year (read about that here). In the meantime, they still have plenty of projects in the works to show off in Palo Alto.

According to MBRDNA President and CEO Johann Jungwirth, the company's ultimate goal on the Google Glass project is a "seamless" door-to-door transition between pedestrian directions and in-car GPS.

Jungwirth describes a scenario where users select a destination at home, get in the car and drive there, then exit the car and receive remaining directions as a walking route through Google Glass. That's instead of entering and re-entering destinations on in-car and out-of-car navigation systems.

Mercedes engineers told me the combination of Glass and auto navigation has some time to incubate before it hits the market, largely because most consumers still can?t get their hands on the pricey wearable computing devices.

In the meantime, I saw a demo of a product already available, the Drive Kit Plus for iPhone. The smartphone plug-in accessory sells for about $600 and works in Mercedes cars with a free app called Digital DriveStyle to harness the smartphone to provide in-car entertainment and information.

How to setup and use Google Chromecast with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

How to setup and use Google Chromecast with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Everything you need to know about getting started with Google's new Chromecast wireless streaming device, and how to control it with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac!

The Google Chromecast is one of the hot tickets in the tech world right now, and while it has somewhat limited functionality compared to something like an Apple TV, there's a lot to be said for it. It's only $35 for starters, and has cross-platform functionality ? though Google's idea of cross-platform is still limited to ChromeOS and the Chrome browser, iOS and Android. That's great news for us however, as with Netflix and YouTube initially ? and likely Google Play Music when it finally makes the jump to iOS ? supported already, we can get in on the action. So, if you're tempted, keep on scrolling for everything you need to know!

Setup

Our buddies over at Android Central have been playing with the Chromecast for a few days now, and have put together a pretty comprehensive setup guide. On Android there's a handy app available in Google Play to help you get going, but if you're going to be using your Chromecast with your Mac and or your iOS device, you'll need to use the Mac to get setup. Head over to the Google Chromecast page where you'll find a download link for the Chromecast app for your Mac. Once installed, it's a matter of a few simple steps to get your Chromecast dongle set up on your home WiFi network, and then you should be good to go.

Playing your content on your TV

Andrew from Android Central has put together a great walkthrough video on what to do when you're up and running with your Chromecast in order to get your stuff onto your TV. Though demonstrated on an Android device, the basic principles are pretty much the same on iOS, so it's definitely worth a watch.

Netflix is one of the initial partners for Chromecast, and Android Central's Jerry Hildenbrand has tested things out with the Netflix iOS app, and all appears well so far. When your YouTube and Netflix apps are on the same networks as your Chromecast, you should see the magic buttons appear in front of you.

Using the browser

Chromecast can mirror full screen browser tabs from your Mac or PC to your TV in the same way you mirror content from your mobile device. This is very similar to the AirPlay we know and love, though only works for content within the confines of Chrome on your computer. And, with the Google Cast Chrome extension installed, you can also beam YouTube videos over directly from the browser. Pretty neat.

Jump into the forums!

The Android Central forums are buzzing about the Chromecast right now, and is without a doubt the best place you can go to get tips and tricks, share your own thoughts, and generally jump into some great discussions about Google's $35 dongle. As more folks get their hands on one, and more services partner up, the discussions will only get better. And, with your Mobile Nations Passport, you can just head on over there and get started!

Your thoughts

If you've already picked up a Chromecast, or are planning on doing so soon, we'd like to hear your thoughts on it. What is it that attracts you to it, that makes it a compelling purchase for you? In particular, what drives you to the Chromecast over something such as an Apple TV? We'd love to hear from you!

Ranking Central Florida's top 10 high-school quarterbacks

For an area that produced Hagerty's Jeff Driskel (Florida) in 2011 and Winter Park's Asiantii Woulard (UCLA) last year, Central Florida is highly regarded for its high-school quarterbacks.

This season's list may not include a player on that level, but the number of potential impact players is much deeper. Consider that our ranking of the top 10 QBs, which took into account past production, potential and value to his team, does not include a player coming off a 2,000-yard passing season, Jimmy Kealy of Freedom; a player who has committed to UAB, Drew Eckels of South Daytona Warner Christian; or Volusia County's leading passer in 2012, Marcus Johnson of New Smyrna Beach.

10. Ervin Barrett

The 6-foot-3 sophomore nicknamed "Woody'' started one game last year for Evans, seeing limited time as a backup, but is poised for a breakout season.

"I don't think there is another quarterback with his size and ability around here,'' Lyman coach Jeff Gierke said. "The kid is freaky.''

9. Jabari Dunham

A great athlete who stars on the basketball team and is a talented safety. Dunham transferred from Eustis to Leesburg after totaling more than 2,000 offensive yards and 14 touchdowns for the Panthers as a junior.

8. Bryant Mosher

Although the Mount Dora senior missed his junior year with a knee injury, his 314-yard, five-TD performance in a spring game showed he is capable of leading the Hurricanes to a district title, a feat not accomplished in 20 years.

7. Hayden Griffitts

West Orange fans hope to see their team in the playoffs for the first time since 1999, and the play of their senior quarterback will be key. He threw for 1,793 yards and 23 TDs and rushed for 516 yards and six more TDs last year.

6. Jerrell Antoine

Oak Ridge's dual-threat quarterback possesses a strong arm and is extremely elusive when plays break down. He attracted an offer from Louisville following his sophomore year and responded with a 2,000-yard junior season.

5. Jason Driskel

Just like his brother, Jeff, Jason starts for Hagerty and will play Division I football after committing to Florida Atlantic this month.

"He's as sound mechanically as anyone I've seen," Oviedo coach Wes Allen said. "He controls the game very well.''

4. Tucker Israel

The Lake Nona junior is on pace to break multiple area career-passing records. In two seasons, he has amassed 6,609 passing yards and 67 touchdowns.

3. Deondre Francois

The talented passer from Olympia gained offers from Louisville and North Carolina after throwing for over 1,600 yards last year as a sophomore.

"He can make all the throws and has a quick release,'' said former Olympia coach Bob Head, who is in his first season at West Orange. "He's one of the best in the state.''

2. Chris Davis

The senior led Oviedo to a region final last year, and the Lions could be better this year with his leadership. The UCF commit had nearly 2,000 offensive yards and accounted for 17 touchdowns in 2012.

1. Zack Darlington

The 2012 All-Central Florida Offensive Player of the Year committed to Nebraska six weeks ago. He passed for 1,725 yards and 19 TDs and rushed for 708 yards and 10 TDs in leading the Blue Darters to the Class 8A state championship.

India's Grand Mufti seen enjoying concert after declaring music 'un-Islamic'

A video clip of Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad, the ceremonial leader of Muslims in the state, apparently enjoying an evening of Kashmiri ghazals, musical poems, and Punjabi folk tunes, quickly went viral on YouTube as political leaders accused him of hypocrisy.

The fatwa was backed by the Darul Uloom Deobandi seminary, one of the world's most influential centres of Islamic jurisprudence. It provoked a public debate over freedom of expression in Kashmir, which, while Muslim-dominated, has traditionally been a more liberal culture than in the Arab Islamic world.

Kashmir's chief minister Omar Abdullah defended their right to perform following the Mufti's fatwa, but the threats intimidated the group, called Pragaash, and its members decided to disband.

Shehla Rashid, a Kashmiri activist for freedom of speech and supporter of the girl band Pragaash, said the Grand Mufti had been wrong to denounce singing, but she would not criticise his choice to attend a concert.

"It doesn't matter whether the so-called Grand Mufti listens to music or not. His statement was uncalled for. He should respect freedom of expression," she said.

Exclusive: EU to clear US Airways, American $11 billion merger - sources

By Foo Yun Chee

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - AMR Corp's American Airlines and US Airways will win EU approval for their $11 billion merger to become the world's largest carrier after agreeing to cede slots on a transatlantic route, three persons familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The airlines offered to give up slots at Heathrow and Philadelphia airports earlier this month after the European Commission raised competition concerns over the route.

"The deal is set to be approved," one source said.

Antitrust regulators typically require merging airlines to surrender slots to new entrants, thereby preserving competition.

The European Commission will rule on the planned merger by August 6. Commission spokesman Ryan Heath declined to comment on the EU competition authority's decision.

US Airways declined to comment. Its shares were unchanged at $19.23 in early morning trade.

AMR could not be immediately reached for comment. Its shares, which are traded over the counter in the United States, reversed a 1 percent loss and were trading 0.7 percent higher at $5.76 in early trade after Reuters reported on the EU approval.

The merger would be the means by which American emerges from Chapter 11 protection, which it sought in late 2011.

U.S. regulators are also examining the tie-up, the fourth involving major U.S. carriers in the last six years which could help accelerate the recovery in the airline industry as the few remaining players get more power to raise fares.

AMR in an SEC regulatory filing earlier this month said that competition regulators in Canada, Brazil and Mexico examined the deal without taking further action.

Sex and video games: Virtual reality erotica may be the HolyGrail

Video games

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Wicked Paradise

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Video games stand apart from the rest of modern technology because of the medium's immunity to pornography. Perhaps it's because gamers ? historically male teenagers and twentysomethings ? just aren't into porn, right?

OK, that can't be it.

The more likely reason is that it's really, really hard to blend sex and video games in a convincing way. Sure, on TV's "30 Rock," fictional character Tracy Jordan dreamed up a game "where characters get weird with each other for golden points." But until recently, all that reality produced were Japanese dating sims, clumsy hook-ups in "Second Life" and silly bouncing cars in "Grand Theft Auto." Even Paul Trowe, the CEO of Replay Games ? which recently rebooted the cheesy and borderline-offensive "Leisure Suit Larry" franchise ? admitted to NBC News that the infamous game "isn't about sex; it's about the absence of sex."

"Heavy Rain" was considered groundbreaking for the quality of its voice-over and motion-capture work when it was released in 2010

Heavy Rain / Sony

"Heavy Rain" may have been visually groundbreaking when it was released in 2010, but the horrendously awkward sex scene is one of the main things that kept players from truly suspending disbelief.

Video game virtual sex has been on an upswing in recent years, with varying degrees of success. Character-driven games like "Dragon Age" and "Heavy Rain" created somber novelesque sex scenes with a photorealism never before rendered in polygons, but drew complaints that the illusion fell flat. Character movements are a bit inhuman, or worse, players are required to participate in goofy ways, like using a PS3's dual joysticks to unhook a virtual bra.

And that's the problem.

The closer developers get to "virtual sex," the greater the risk of falling into the uncanny valley ? our natural revulsion to the not-quite human. (This divide is what makes "The Incredibles" more watchable than "Polar Express.") What will it take to bridge the valley? The latest virtual-reality goggles and full-body motion sensing a la Xbox Kinect, working in tandem, says Jeroen Van den Bosch, the latest entrepreneur to seek this Holy Grail.

Think 'wicked'
Belgium-born Van den Bosch runs a small startup in Irvine, Calif., and claims to have a working prototype of "the world's first erotic virtual reality adventure game."

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Wicked Paradise

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Exactly how players hook up in "Wicked Paradise" isn?t something Van den Bosch will detail during the development phase. But he claims his game will succeed where others have failed because the visual quality of computer-generated images (CGI) is finally able to make practically life-like characters.

Van den Bosch also has a not-so-secret weapon ? a virtual reality (VR) gaming headset heralded as the first VR product that actually works. The Oculus Rift ? high-tech goggles through which users see 3-D panoramic images that adjust in real time ? promises "total immersion" for the player.

"So in real life when you're reaching out to grab that door handle" (or whatever else one might want to reach out and grab in an "erotic" game), "in virtual reality you can see yourself do exactly the same thing," Van den Bosch said.

"It's awesome," he says of his as-yet-unseen game.

Erotica or smut?
Just don?t call the game "pornography."

"Porn is making something that you watch; we're making something that you do,? Van den Bosch told NBC News.

Van den Bosch working with one of the motion-capture actresses for "Wicked Paradise." He told NBC News that his work on "Wicked Paradise" was inspired by recent games like "Heavy Rain" and "The Last of Us" that were praised for the quality of their motion-capture and voiceover work that helped create realistic and dynamic characters with which players could interact.

?We have thousands of very well-designed shooter games that all cater to negative emotions ? terror and fear," Van den Bosch said. "But we very rarely have any attempts to create positive emotions like passion, seduction, and love."

He?s not alone in this observation.

Modern game design hasn't exactly evolved to make different kinds of relationships and interactions with game characters possible, explained Belinda Van Sickle, the president and CEO of Women in Games International, which works to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the games industry worldwide.

"The template game mechanic for so many games is just shooting things," Van Sickle told NBC News. "And that's just because: sex is not simple. Violence is simple!"

Van den Bosch, too, is critical of the game industry's double standard of inviting people to consume horrendously violent work while simultaneously abhorring anything that has the least bit to do with sex.

Nonetheless, news of "Wicked Paradise" has been met with sarcastic smirks if not outright disdain. "This is why we can't have nice things," BuzzFeed's game critic quipped in an article about "the horny dudes" who are "making a porno" for the Oculus Rift.

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships.

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships. Despite breaking new ground, many gamers and even the game's own developers now admit that the blocky animations and Enya-esque soundtrack for the sex scenes made it hard to appreciate them for anything but their sheer camp value.

Rather than a ?porno,? Van den Bosch prefers to compare ?Wicked Paradise? to ?Game of Thrones? ? something that has says is "very sexually explicit but still has a great storyline."

Will it catch on?
Whether or not the eight-person team behind "Wicked Paradise" is truly a group of inspired artists or just a group of "horny dudes," Van Sickle told NBC News that she doubts the mainstream game industry will change its outlook about sex in video games any time soon.

Sickle said that since the Entertainment Software Rating Board's main purpose is to protect "the video game industry from becoming a target" of public criticism, she would be surprised if the organization starting relaxing its stringent standards around sexual material (compared to, say, violent content) any time soon.

"Leisure Suit Larry" was one of the first games to popularize the dating simulation/adventure game hybrid for American audiences. While the series has become synonymous with the salacious underbelly of video games, Paul Trowe, president of Replay Games, insists that "Leisure Suit Larry" is more about "the absence of sex" than anything explicit or raunchy. His company recently released "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded," the latest installment in the series, to middling reviews.

The ESRB rating system maintains a powerful enough grip over many of the most lucrative parts of the industry that the vast majority of game developers making material like Van den Bosch's don't bother submitting games for a rating. Receiving an Adults-Only (AO) rating from the ESRB preemptively shuts it off from millions of players, since none of the major game consoles or video game retailers like Wal-Mart or Best Buy will allow AO-rated games anywhere near their customers.

As with the Internet, Van Sickle thinks that sexually explicit material in video games is an eventual inevitability ? as long as hardware developers like Oculus VR keep their promise to not regulate content. And, well, that may not be such a bad thing after all.

"There's a market for adult video games, because adults play video games and adults like sex," Van Sickle said. "So I'd like it see to grow and become something above-ground, rather than what it is right now."

If what?s hanging on your office walls says anything about you, the stuff hanging on the walls in John Capone?s office says he loves the Beatles, his family and science and has a great respect for John F. Kennedy.

Two photos of the former U.S. president take up valuable space on the walls, including the iconic one called The Loneliest Job in the World that shows Kennedy hunched over his desk in the Oval Office.

The image had become synonymous with the difficulties of Kennedy?s presidency during the Cuban missile crisis, but in fact, shows him standing to read the newspaper because of chronic back problems.

?Why do I have that?? Capone asks. ?Because you never know what you?re looking at.?

You could say the same for Capone, who when he?s not talking about future plans strengthening Western University as a global research leader, can be found in his garage at his home in Hamilton, standing knee-deep in the spume of sawdust.

He picked up woodworking as a boy watching his father hew rough pieces of wood into custom furniture, his mother sewing the fabric.

It was how his parents carved out a living to support Capone and his two sisters swaddled in the neighbourhoods of Steeltown.

?It was a great upbringing,? he says. ?You had everything you needed but nothing excessive.?

His father, who immigrated to Canada in the 1950s, decided to learn a trade in a bid to control his own destiny rather than take up work in Hamilton?s thriving manufacturing industry where so many planted their roots.

He opened a small shop next to the family home, where there was a seamless transition between work and life and the blueprint for working hard, overcoming struggles and commitment were imprinted on Capone?s childhood memories.

?It had a great influence. In many cases, the wave of immigration to Canada after the war, there were a lot of jobs around, especially in manufacturing in Hamilton

. . . and many chose that and had a good life. My father from the outset said he needed to develop a skill and a trade so he would have a little bit more independence and the ability to do things that he liked to do,? he says.

Woodworking comes naturally to Capone, who has a long line of master carpenters on his mother?s side.

He wasn?t able to park a car in his garage in Hamilton for at least 15 years because of the woodworking tools and wood.

The noise from the tools offers Capone a sort of peace and quiet, the ability to keep any mistakes he makes to himself.

?I have a lot of expensive firewood,? he says, laughing.

But he also has many memories.

Over the years, cabinets, furniture, chess tables auctioned at fundraisers and jewelry boxes he made for each of his three daughters have all passed through his hands.

When Capone and his wife Julie packed up their belongings and moved to London less than a year ago so he could take on the post of vice-president of research at Western, they left the sawdust behind and a more than two decade-long career at McMaster University where he introduced a new way to teach science.

The program, called integrated science, exposes students to research early on, Capone says.

?It?s actually fairly unique in Canada.?

The first class graduated this year, and to mark the occasion for a missing Capone, the graduates posed for a photo, each one signing their name on matting surrounding the frame.

That, too, hangs on the wall in Capone?s office, along with another photograph from friends and colleagues at McMaster, with private notes and letters tucked behind for safe keeping.

Capone has been travelling the road between Hamilton and London long before his career jump to Western.

He earned his degree in biochemistry from Western in 1978.

When he started at Western, biochemistry wasn?t necessarily on his radar.

He thought about going to medical school but early on decided that?s not where his interest lies.

?I was always interested in tinkering and building things with my hands and understanding how things worked,? he says.

He thought about engineering, but had an affinity for the natural sciences.

In the 1970s there were many new advances in biochemistry, particularly with cloning, he says, and that piqued his interest.

Explaining exactly what biochemistry is to his parents wasn?t easy, Capone says.

?It was something strange to my parents. It?s hard to understand. They knew I was going to school at higher and higher levels . . . but it was hard to explain exactly what you were doing and what it meant. In my mother?s eyes, you have a PhD, you?re called a doctor, you must be a doctor . . . but the support was always there.?

And as exciting as the prospect of biochemistry was for Capone at that time, he is just as excited about the future of research at Western now.

As vice-president of research, Capone will carve out the university?s way forward when it comes to research aspirations ? one, he says, that is intricately linked to the city?s economic and social prosperity.

His portfolio oversees research, discovery and scholarship within the university and partnerships between Western and the hospitals, city, research institutes and every level of government and those on the international stage.

The university has a chance to be a leader and globally competitive in certain aspects of research and that will be his focus ? spotlighting areas where Western excels and elevating it so that the university becomes a global leader in that specific research sector.

That then becomes a beacon to attract the best and brightest ? not only faculty and staff ? but funding from private donors.

?There are some areas where we?re going to say Western is or can be the best. And if it?s almost the best, what can we do to make it the best, to sustain it? It?s all about excellence and innovation across our university.?

'Wolverine' claws past ghosts to win box office

"The Wolverine," starring Hugh Jackman as Marvel Comics' sharp- clawed superhero, slashed its way to $55 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales to claim the box office crown in a summer that hasn't been kind to some other big-budget action films.

"The Conjuring," the low-budget horror film that led last weekend's box office, slipped to second place with $22.1 million in domestic sales from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The film has generated nearly $84 million in overall ticket sales, a surprisingly strong showing for a film that cost just under $20 million to make.

The animated film "Despicable Me 2," featuring the voice of comic actor Steve Carell, finished third with $16 million in ticket sales in its fourth week in movie theaters. The film was made by Universal Pictures and has collected more than $660 million in ticket sales around the world.

Animated film "Turbo," about a super-speedy snail with dreams of racing in the Indy 500, took the No. 4 slot with sales of $13.3 million. Ryan Reynolds provides the voice for the title character in the film produced by "Shrek" creator DreamWorks Animation.

"The Wolverine" fell short of Hollywood insiders' $72 million weekend estimates, the latest in a string of big-budget action films that failed to meet expectations, though it performed strongly overseas.

In recent weeks "R.I.P.D.," "Pacific Rim," "The Lone Ranger," and "White House Down" all fizzled at the box office.

"We're incredibly happy with this result," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, which distributed "The Wolverine."

"It's good news on a global scale, and this is a global business," Aronson said. The film took in more than $86 million internationally, for a total worldwide gross of $141 million.

"The Wolverine," which cost an estimated $120 million to make, stars Jackman in his sixth film as the ageless mutant, which is also featured in the "X-Men" movies. Those six films have generated $1.9 billion in worldwide ticket sales, according to the movie site Box Office Mojo.

The latest chapter was the lowest opening film in the "X-Men" franchise since the first film opened with $54.5 million in 2000, and fell far short of the $85 million take for the first Wolverine film, 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Reviews were mixed to solid on "Wolverine," with a 68 percent positive rating on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes and the film received an A-minus CinemaScore rating based on moviegoers' input. Ticket site Fandango said the film grabbed 51 percent of advance sales, with 73 percent saying they would not want to see the film without Jackman in the lead role.

Aronson also pointed to the importance of the star as a huge draw at the worldwide box office. "We're going to be phenomenally successful at the end of the day," he said.

In limited release, comedy "The To Do List" earned just over $1.5 million from 591 theaters, close to its $1.5 million production cost. The movie stars Aubrey Plaza from NBC TV's "Parks & Recreation" as a high-school graduate who wants to lose her virginity before she heads to college.

"The Wolverine" was made by 20th Century Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox, which also distributed "Turbo." "The Conjuring" was released by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc. Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Despicable Me 2." "The To Do List" was distributed by CBS Films, a unit of CBS Corp.

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea marked the 60th anniversary of the truce that ended the Korean War with a lavish and painstakingly choreographed military parade through Pyongyang?s main square, a solemn gathering led by leader Kim Jong Un at a newly opened war museum that features prominently the USS Pueblo spy ship captured in?1968.

This year?s parade appeared to offer more flash and pageant than new revelations of the secretive North?s military capabilities, though one unit prominently carried kits marked with the bright yellow nuclear symbol, a reminder of the North?s claims that it is preparing itself against a nuclear attack by the United States and is developing a nuclear arsenal of its?own.

The extravagant assembly of weapons and goose-stepping troops on Saturday was reminiscent of the marches held by the Soviet Union and China at the height of the Cold War. It is one of the few chances the world gets to see North Korea?s military up close. Although Pyongyang frequently uses the occasion to reveal new, though not always operational, hardware, there didn?t appear to be any major new weapons in Saturday?s?parade.

Overlooking a sea of spectators mobilized in Kim Il Sung Square to cheer and wave flags, leader Kim Jong Un saluted his troops from a review stand. He was flanked by senior military officials, the chests of their olive green and white uniforms laden with medals. As fighter jets screamed overhead, a relaxed looking Kim smiled and talked with China?s vice president. China fought with North Korea during the war and is Pyongyang?s only major ally and a crucial source of economic aid. Kim did not make a?speech.

Saturday?s parade marked a holiday the North Koreans call ?Victory Day in the Fatherland Liberation War,? although the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce and the Korean Peninsula remains technically at?war.

Chang Yong-seok, a senior researcher at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University, said North Korea intended to use the anniversary to highlight Kim Jong Un?s?leadership.

?It was a political performance meant to show off that Kim Jong Un remains powerful and strong,? said Chang Yong-seok, a senior researcher at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National?University.

He said Kim standing side by side China?s vice president was a reminder of the Cold War when North Korea and China stood against South Korea and the U.S., he said. It also indicated that North Korea wants to demonstrate its ties with China are on a path to recovery, which could send a message to the?U.S.

Kim?s rule, which began in late 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, has been marked by high tensions with Washington and Seoul. He has overseen two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test that drew widespread condemnation and tightened U.N.?sanctions.

North and South Korea have turned to tentative diplomacy in recent weeks, but March and April saw North Korean threats of nuclear war against Washington and Seoul in response to annual South Korean-U.S. military drills and U.N. condemnation of Pyongyang?s February nuclear test, the country?s third. Long-stalled North Korean nuclear disarmament talks show no sign of?resuming.

Last year?s parade in Pyongyang, held to commemorate the April celebrations of the 100th birthday of the late national founder Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un?s grandfather, created a buzz among military watchers when the North rolled out a mysterious long-range missile known abroad as the KN-08. Most outside observers now believe the missiles were mock-ups, but they were carried on mobile launchers that appeared to have been obtained from China, possibly against U.N. arms trade?sanctions.

From the archives: Remembering the Korean War

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

As North Korea marks the?60th anniversary of what is sees as its victory in the Korean War, we dug into the NBC News archive to see how the commemoration of the 1953 armistice was covered through the years.?

A 1953 NBC special looks back at the Korean War and features the voices of soldiers who survived some of the fiercest battles.

The 1950s conflict that some Americans now call the "Forgotten War" began on June 25, 1950, and ended with?the two sides signing a truce -- a peace treaty has yet to be negotiated. This 1953 report features first-hand accounts from U.S. soldiers and their recollection of life on the frontline.?

After three years of bloody war, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced the armistice on July 27, 1953.?

As a cease-fire is called in the Korean War, President Eisenhower recalls Abraham Lincoln's famous words, "with malice towards none, with charity for all."

"With special feelings of sorrow -- and of solemn gratitude -- we think of those who were called upon to lay down their lives in that far-off land to prove once again that only courage and sacrifice can keep freedom alive upon the earth," Eisenhower said.

More than two years before that moment, the?firing of Gen. Douglas MacArthur set off an uproar among the American public. He returned to the United States to a hero's welcome and gave a memorable address.

"I am closing my 52 years of military service," MacArthur said in his 1951 address to Congress. "The world has turned over many times since I took the oath at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have all since vanished, but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barracks ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that old soldiers never die; they just fade away.

In his retirement speech, General Douglas MacArthur makes his famous pronouncement, "old soldiers never die, they just fade away."

And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty."?

A new robot-guided missile is used for the first time in combat, as this exclusive Defense Department film shows.

This 1952 video shows missiles guided by radio and sent directly to their Korean targets, in a move that heralded a new era of warfare.?

Finally, the 1950 news report below features exclusive footage of the largest refugee camp in the peninsula, with the dire warning that it was just the beginning of a drawn-out conflict that would displace tens of thousands.?

NBC reports that UN forces win back three miles of lost terrain and exclusive footage shows the largest refugee camp in Korea, with 40,000 residents.

Writing to Rome when the bishop or pastor does nothing to correct liturgical abuses

Letter by letter.

At the blog Socon or Bust I saw a post about a woman who had been writing to her local bishop for some years about liturgical abuses at her parish. ?The bishop, predictably, did nothing.

She wrote to the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome.

She received a response from?Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome.

The Congregation encouraged her to continue to write to the bishop.

I suspect the Congregation has sent an inquiry to the same bishop to determine what gives.

I have posted TIPS for how to write to ecclesiastical authorities about your concerns. ?HERE.

The least?helpful thing you can do is send a letter full of acrimony and very little proof of what you claim is going on.

Read the tips. ?Really.
