With the presidential election a year away, Alabama voters are looking for candidates that will represent them on important issues like the Alabama immigration law and the continuing battle with BP. Currently, Alabama is governed by Republican Robert Bentley and is served by a largely Republican Congressional delegation. Although the state voted for John McCain in the last election, Alabamians were disappointed no candidates visited the state.
Here is what the voters in Bienville Square in downtown Mobile are saying a year from the election.
* "Herman Cain is going to be the next president, at least that's how I think Alabama will vote. Look, this guy knows how to run a business and we need someone like that to stop that the spending spree our government is on. I think someone like Rick Santorum would be a good running mate for Mr. Cain." -- John Dunning, photographer, Theodore
* "Ron Paul needs to be the president. He's the only one with any sense. I can't stand listening to any of them really, but I'd like to see him win. John Huntsman would be a good VP, but I'm not sure those two really get along." -- Don Ramsey, painter, Grand Bay
* "For sure, it will be Mitt Romney. I think a lot of people don't like him but at the end of the day, they'll come together to vote for him. If he was smart, he'd get someone like Herman Cain or Michele Bachmann to be his running mate. That way, he'd take some of the conservative votes. Normally, I vote Republican but I'm really an independent. Also, I like the immigration law and I'd like to see a president that protects the state's rights." -- Shawn LeFlore, caterer, Mobile
* "Are you kidding me? Of course it will be Herman Cain. When was the last time any presidential candidate visited Alabama. I don't know, but I don't remember any of them. Herman Cain did and that means a lot to the people down here. I did not get to see him, but I have friends that did. I think the Tea Party likes him too and I'm a member of the Tea Party. I hope he becomes president. Herman Cain needs Newt Gingrich to be his running mate because Newt knows everyone and knows how things work. At least, that's what I think. This BP thing needs to get wrapped up too and I'm sure he'd help us with that." -- Michelle Knowles, housewife, Mobile
* "Barack Obama needs four more years to get the things done he's promised us. He worked hard to fix health care and now look what they have done to it. If we had any sense we'd re-elect Obama and get Hillary Clinton to be his running mate instead of Joe Biden. He has been a big disappointment. I'm a registered Democrat and I'm proud of it." -- Cy Weaver, car salesman, Mobile
* "I'm a Democrat so I hope Barack Obama wins again, but I'm not really sure. I am disappointed about how bad things are. My husband can't find a job, but I don't blame just Obama. Everyone in Washington has really (messed) us up. Mr. Obama needs to stand up to all those criminals and lead us in the right direction." -- Millie James, housekeeper, Crichton
* "It's going to be bad. I don't think I'll watch television until after next November. At first, I wanted Rick Perry to win because he seemed strong but now I would rather see Herman Cain win. I guess if Mitt Romney wins the nomination I will vote for him. Anyone but Obama. I wish Sarah Palin or Donald Trump would have ran. This would be a more interesting race. A Herman Cain-Mitt Romney ticket would be good too." -- Ed Booth, clerk, Mobile
"I'd like to see a Democrat win but not Obama. He's not doing anything but complaining. Ron Paul says some good stuff too. Like bringing all the troops home and cutting down on spending. I like having social programs but I think we have too many doing the same things. Somebody needs to streamline the government and I don't think Barack Obama is going to do that. Republicans don't need to win though. We have enough of them here in Alabama. We need something different." -- Cindy Patrick, supervisor, Semmes
* "Newt Gingrich. I don't think interfere with the state's laws on immigration. Also, Newt Gingrich has experience. We need an experienced leader after the last four years. What a mess Obama has gotten us into. I'd like to see someone like Rick Santorum run with Newt Gingrich. I think they could win together." -- Judy King, bus driver, Mobile
