The City of Fort Wayne recognized the Muslim community Tuesday night with the Iftar.

Mayor Tom Henry, D-Fort Wayne, hosted the fifth annual Iftar, which breaks a fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Henry was the first Indiana mayor to public commemorate the event.

"Fort Wayne has celebrated and continues to celebrate diversity," Henry says. "As you look around the room this evening, you see a lot of different colors, creeds and religions. I'm very proud to be one of the few mayors in Indiana to celebrate Iftar; and I'm very glad that others are beginning to take notice."

Similar Iftars are being celebrated by President Obama and Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind.. The communal meals provide opportunities for people of various faiths to come together.

"We tried to invite non-Muslims as well as Muslims to come and attend," Ahmed Abdel?mageed of Muslim Alliance of Indiana says. "It's becoming more and more interfaith. We feel strongly about sharing are practices and showing people the generosity that stems from Islamic faith."

The Muslim Alliance of Indiana is a nonprofit group that fosters professional relationships between Muslims, civil leaders and leaders of other faiths.

Ramadan is the month in which Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad. Ramadan ends Aug 8.
