Rights chief urges probe of CIA detention centers (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Europe's human rights chief is urging Lithuania, Poland and Romania to come clean about their roles in the CIA's program of "secret detention and torture" of terrorism suspects.

Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe's rights commissioner, said Monday that "the damage inflicted on our European system of human rights protection" can be repaired only if the full truth is established.

In the 1990s, hundreds of covert "extraordinary rendition" flights shuttled prisoners between CIA-run overseas prisons and the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay. Hammarberg says interrogation methods at such prisons often "crossed the threshold" of cruel treatment and torture.

Hammarberg says in a statement effective investigations are imperative and long overdue.
