A new study, published today in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, states that the main type of ultraviolet rays used in tanning beds, which are UVA 1 rays, may penetrate to a deep layer of skin that is most susceptible to the cancer-causing changes caused by UV rays.
In the study, volunteers exposed to UVA1 rays caused a type of lesion called thymine dimers on the deeper basal layers of the skin. Any cancer specialist or dermatologist will tell you this is a very serious outcome.
A myth that tanning beds continue to advertise is that tanning beds elevate Vitamin D, which is acquired naturally from sunlight.
