U.S. Embassies Closed in Middle East and Africa Amid Threat

Nearly two dozen American embassies throughout the Middle East and Africa were closed Sunday in response to an al-Qaida terror threat uncovered by government officials.

The closures are in effect at 21 different embassies and could be extended if necessary.

While U.S. officials have not released any specific information about the threat, they say it is credible enough to warrant the unprecedented move.

The closures are also accompanied by a global travel alert for all Americans.

Experts say tighter security here in the U.S. has forced terrorists to shift their focus to attacking overseas targets.

The Obama Administration says the president has had several briefings on the potential attack but would not provide any more specifics.
